Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second book of seven epic Harry Potter series. It is written by Joanne Kathleen Rowling from Scotland. In Indonesia it is translated by Listiana Srisanti. Now, I want to try to analyze the quality of the translation of the chapter. In this case, I have divided my analyzing into five points. They are contextual meaning, some missing words, addition words, unsent message and the last is some words that are not translated.
The first is about contextual meaning. I noticed that there are some words that translator tries to make a translation that easy to understand in Bahasa Indonesia, instead of translate it words by words. She made a bit change to make the sentence sound smooth and easy to understand. For example, “what wouldn’t he give now for a message from Hogwarts”, it is translated “dia rela memberikan apa pun untuk mendapatkan kabar dari Hogwarts.” Here, we can see that she did not translate words by words, but change in order to make Indonesian readers easy to understand. Another example, “wish they could see famous Harry Potter now” is translated “sayang sekali mereka tidak bisa melihat Harry Potter sekarang.” Actually, that sentence should be translated “semoga mereka bisa melihat Harry Potter yang terkenal sekarang.” But she chose to change it into the sentence that sound more dramatic in Indonesian ears, and I think it did. The last example is “he’s doing you know what.” It should be translated “dia melakukan kau-tahu-apa.” Instead of it, she translated “dia melakukan yang tak boleh itu.” It is, indeed, a different words and meaning, but it has the same general meaning that is, both sentence refers to “magic.” I think she did a great job because she tries to make the sentence as natural for Indonesian readers as possible.
The next is about some missing words. The translator, in some cases, tried to skip or delete the native words and did not translate it. For example, in the opening paragraph, she did not translate breakfast. It is good decision, I think, because if it is translated, the sentence will sound awkward. Actually, this missing word did not influence the content of paragraph at all, because the next sentence tells that Mr. Dursley had been woken out in the early hours of the morning, so, even though there is no word ‘breakfast’ Indonesian readers still know that it is breakfast time. There are other examples such as, “sleeping in his four-poster bed in the tower dormitory” (tidur di tempat tidurnya di menara asrama), and “a joint of roast pork was sizzling in the oven” (daging panggang sedang berdesis di dalam oven). The bold words above were not translated, and I think it was a wrong choice. The Indonesian readers could not know that Harry’s bed has four-poster, and that the meat in the oven is pork. However, when she translated “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry” into “Sekolah Sihir Hogwarts,” I do agree, because both ‘witchcraft’ and ‘wizardry’ have the same meaning in Bahasa Indonesia. In general, in some cases the missing words do well, but in other cases do not.
The third is about addition words. I noticed that the translator added some words in order to make the sentence either sound dramatic or easy to read. For example, “Dudley was blond, pink and pork” is translated “Dudley berambut pirang, kulitnya agak merah jambu, jadi kesannya seperti babi”; it is good translation because she added some description words to make readers easy to understand the content. The other example is, “this was to much for both aunt Petunia and Harry,” is translated “ini sudah kelewatan, baik bagi bibi Petunia maupun harry, walaupun dengan alasan berbeda.” The bold word, indeed, is not exist in the original one, but I love the way she added it because it sounds more dramatic, funny and also helps readers understanding. It is an excellent addition.
The fourth is about the unsent message. We see that Harry says “You’ve forgotten the magic word” (Kau lupa kata sihirnya), although the translation is good, but I think the message of this words is unsent. In English, the term ‘magic word’ may also refer to the word please when used by adults to teach children manners, but Indonesian readers do not know it. So, the feel when Indonesian read between ‘kata sihir’ and ‘tolong’, is difference with the native when read between ‘magic words’ and ‘please.’
The last is about the words that is not translated such as “happy birthday to me”, or “gentleman.” I think it was good choice to not translating it because the reader are familiar with those words, and by not translating it, the reader can feel the content of the story deeply.
In conclusion, I think the translator did a great job. She can make a translation that easy to understand, natural, and appropriate with the Indonesian culture.

This story is interesting making children until adult love it very much. In my countries, this film is famous as well. Both the film and the book is well – known. Many translators try to translate the both in Indonesian language. What I’d like to analyze in this essay is about the translation of the book in Indonesian language. I’ll try to analyze the quality of the translation of the Chapter 1 of “Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets.”
The whole of translation is good. Obviously, it is a difficult job when the translator tries to translate this story from English language to Indonesian language. He need grammar and vocabulary knowledge to do this because not all English words have same meaning with Indonesian words. He takes Indonesian words that represent English words. After reading this translation, I knew what the author would tell for us. I get the point this story. The translator chooses the appropriate words that the meaning equal with English language. The chosen of words is good, making the story understandable. All the words are familiar for me. So I can feel the power of this story.
The translator consistent with the original text. He doesn’t change the real condition in the original text. Sometimes, some translators who aren’t clever enough will translate a text which the meaning is not appropriate with the original text. If it is happened, it will change the message of the story. But the translator doesn’t do that. After I compare the original text and the translation, both of them are acceptable as two languages that have same meaning. The translation doesn’t change the real meaning of the original text.
One thing that must be noticed in a story is unity. The correlation between one paragraph to others can’t be ignore. That is a unity that builds a story. In this case, the translator did a mistake. He wrote a paragraph into two paragraphs. Whereas, it should be one paragraphs. Look at the 64th paragraphs of this story. The translator wrote the fourth sentences of this paragraph into a new paragraph. It shouldn’t do by him. It can change the real condition of original story. But, so far, in this text, in can’t.
The using of punctuation is also an important thing when writing a sentence. Full stop, coma, and so on must be put in the right place. If not, it can rise an ambiguous of the sentence itself. But look at the 83rd paragraph of this translation. In the second sentences of this paragraph, the conjunction “but” cut off to be a new sentence. These two clauses should be one sentence because the second clause, “but he still had….,” have correlation with first clause. Also, the second clause is a sub clause that can’t stand alone as a sentence without the main clause.
As a matter of fact, this translation is good. But, I don’t agree with the translation of words “slumped down.” In this translation, it means “mengenyakkan” in Indonesian language. It is unfamiliar for me. It will better if it is translate as “menghempaskan.” Except of it, other words are acceptable for me.
Actually, the using words of this translation is full of meaning. When I read it, as if I were playing in this story. I play with words that make me feel what Harry Potter felt. I can feel when Harry was alone in his worst birthday, got sneering from Dudley or when he missed Hogwarts so much. My heart is broken when The Dursleys treated Harry rudely. It’s unfair for Harry. I, as a reader, can touch the sad part of this story. The words are combined in a good sentence with a good grammatical.
Basically, this translation is good to read. It is easy to understand. The translator is able to combine many words in a good sentence then arrange to a good paragraph. Although there are some mistake in using the punctuation and combine some paragraph, it doesn’t seem a big mistake because the whole of this translation is nice, can be accepted for reader.

Analyzing The Quality of The Translation of Chapter 1 of “Harry Potter and The Camber of Secrets’
Harry Potter is a very famous book in around the world. It is a series of seven fantasy novels written by British author J.K Rowling. Many people from the level of children, teenager even adult are interested in this novel. The first novel was released in 1997. As of June 2008, the book series has sold more than 400 million copies and has been translated into 67 languages including Indonesia language (www.wikipedia.com).
This Essay will discuss about the chapter 1 of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” in Indonesian version. I will write everything I felt while I reading this translation and comparing it with the English version. I will use everything that I know about Harry Potter because I am one of million people that very interested in Harry Potter both the books and the movies and I also have some references from some sources that can give more information in writing this essay.
After reading the whole story both English and Indonesian version, I arrive at two opinions. First opinion is that the translator is good in translating the story. What I mean good here is if his point of view in writing the translation is stick on the original text (English). He is good because the order of its translation is perfect. It is appropriate with the original one. Even the order of every single word is the same. Though there are some “weird” words that I feel it will be better if the writer use another word. Here are the weird words:
On the first paragraph the writer wrote
- …bunyi uhu-uhu keras…
I think it is not an appropriate word. What is the meaning of uhu-uhu? It is not clear. Is that the voice of an animal or a boy or another creature? I am even laughing when I read this sentence. I suggest the writer to use another word. The alternative sentence would be:
- …suara teriakan yang sangat keras …
It will be more acceptable for the reader and sounds better than the word “uhu-uhu”.
Actually the whole of paragraph 1 is quite good but then it is very contrast after the appearance of “uhu-uhu”. Moreover it is the first paragraph that leads the reader to the next story. I feel so surprise at the first time when I found this funny word. But then I realize that may be it is one of little mistakes or may be the writer even does mean write this word. I don’ know.
On the second paragraph the writer wrote:
- “Untuk ketiga kalinya minggu ini!” raungnya.
The word “raung” I think it is not appropriate because “raung” is usually used for animals. In my opinion, the writer is better uses “geram” so the sentence would be:
- “Untuk ketiga kalinya minggu ini!” geramnya.
These are the example of little mistakes in chapter one. However, it is not a big problem because the weird words don’t change the story. The main aim of translating is to convey the meaning of text from one language to another language completely. From this fact, the writer is good enough in conveying the English version into Indonesia.
However I also have the second opinion after reading the translation. In my opinion the writer is poor of improvisation. He is too depending on the text. Moreover, sometimes I found the inappropriate words or sentences. For example:
- Harry mencoba berargumentasi.
I think it is better for the writer to change into:
- Harry mencoba membantah.
The word “berargumentasi” is not appropriate with the context of the situation. For me, the word is very strange if it is used in such chaotic situation. Moreover for me, Indonesian, that usually hears the informal conversation.
Due to what I’ve said before that the translator of this book is too depend on the text, it can be seen if we read the English and Indonesia version in the same time. While we are reading the English and than comparing with the version in Indonesia, it will be clear that the writer is very strict to the text.
It will be deferent if we only read the English version without reading the Indonesia. We will not find the different way in conveying the story. However if we are reading both of them automatically we will compare and try to analyze whether the translation is appropriate or not. And we will be more sensitive if we find the strange translation that we think that the sentences, phrases, or the words are not acceptable or inappropriate.
This translation is also poor of improvisation. Whereas in translating, we re not to be always depend on the text. We may use another kind of sentence or structure as long as it does not change the story. The translator should be creative. Doing translation is one of ways to express the creativity. Moreover Harry Potter is a fantastic novel that known by people around the world. If the translator uses the wonderful words in conveying the message it will make the fantastic story become more extraordinary.
The quality of the translation is also being graded by analyzing the creativity of the result especially in translating the fantasy story. It is not only the matter of the meaning but also the influence that can be caught by the reader. If the translator conveys the message thorough the words that can make the readers imagine and drawn into the story it means that he is success in translating the story.
Translating, particularly a fantasy book is not merely translating a text into a different language without considering the improvisation. It needs variation of words to make the story more live. That is a good translation.
From the explanation above it leads me in drawing a conclusion that the translator is good in conveying the story with the original text’s words. He succeeds in delivering the order of the story from English language into Indonesia. However he is not good enough in conveying the message of the story. He did not use any his own word and use no improvisation. Whereas, improvisation is needed to make the story more interesting.

Introduction
Harry Potter is a phenomenon. The novels which were written by J.K. Rowling always able to take interest of the readers. Every chapter offers a story that can make those who are reading it say “Wonderful!”. Adults, teenagers, and even children in the world love to read Harry Potter novel. As we all know, we can also see Harry Potter movies.
One of the series of Harry Potter novel entitled Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret was published. It was translated into so many languages in the world, including Indonesian language. Is the novel good translated or not? I will analyze it from the English-Indonesian translation side. The emphasis here is on Chapter One : The Worst Birthday.
Body/Content
The first chapter sets the proper background for the story, explaining who exactly Harry is, why he is important and why he doesn’t enjoy living with the Dursleys. It gives us the view of the argument done by the Dursley family in their house at 4 Privet Drive. After reading the English version, I got the “feel” of the story. After reading the Indonesian one, I found so many missing “feel”. There are so many strange words in the Indonesian version such as “uha-uhu”, “seserpih” telur goreng, and many more. If it is read by children, it is possible for them to feel confuse or not understand the meaning of the certain “strange words”. The translator may not care of it and still use the equivalent words inappropriately in some aspect of the translation.
In English version, we can see and of course, feel the lack of joy in the Dursley’s lifestyle, their abuse of Harry, and their social-climbing ambitions. We see at once the unpleasantness Harry must face, allowing us to appreciate Hogwarts even before we see it. In Indonesian version, we only consider that it is a common family problem or common argument, unsuitable with the real awful and terrible argument in English one. It shows us the difference of sense that we get from reading both version.
Yet, there is also good sense when I read the Indonesian version when Dudley gasped and fell of his chair with a crash that shock the whole kitchen because of Harry’s speech. The translator has translated it well and I think it is understandable and make sense.
Some informal Indonesian words are used in the Indonesian version such as “He roared across the table” is translated into “Dia meraung…..” whereas “meraung” is a tiger’s sound. “Hooting noise” is translated into “Bunyi uha-uhu” is also informal and can not be understood by ordinary people or children. One thing, I underline the words cauldron and top-of-the range Nimbus Two Thousand Broomstick . In English version, the underlined terms is like a wonderful thing, but after it is translated into Indonesian becomes sapu top nimbus dua ribu, it will make no sense at all. Any words that I think it is not understandable by the readers are “berdeham” /cleared and “mendongak”/looked up.
In part when Harry left through the backdoor, crossed the lawn, slumped down on the garden bench and sang “Happy birthday to me…” and he felt so lonely, we can feel the sadness of him, the loneliness of Harry to be ignored by his family and his friends in Hogwarts. The same part in Indonesian version that I read, the feeling of sad of Harry is almost nothing. It looks like reading the common flat story.
The narrator’s tone in describing the magical artifacts in this chapter is unsurprised. As we see, Harry faces many ordinary problems. He has a bully for a cousin, and he wonders why his good friends from school seem to have forgotten about him. Here, we are introduced to the artifacts and terms of the wizard world such as the word “Muggle”, “Hedwig”, etc. J.K. Rowling creates a surprisingly normal coming of age story for Harry within the fantastic and imaginative world of wizardry. These terms become familiar background to the ups and downs of Harry’s daily life. We are expected to understand that wizards live seemingly ordinary lives and get the “feeling” or “sense” of the story of Harry Potter either from the original English version or the translated version.
Conclusion
After reading both English and Indonesian version of the novel Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret, I conclude that overall translations good enough, but there are some aspects that necessary for the translator to evaluate it by using proper dictions so that we can get the “feeling” and catch the message of the story without being confused of the certain “strange words”.
It is suggested to use the smooth languages and proper dictions in order that young and adult readers can enjoy reading the novel and catch what’s the story about.

The result of the analysis of the chapter one of “Harry Potter and the chamber secrets”
I have analyzed the worst birthday, that is the chapter one of “Harry Potter and the chamber secrets”. Based on my analysis, I can conclude that the result is good. I think of it is good translation because in my opinion, “translation is not merely a transfer meaning from the source language to the target language by transferring dictionaries or transfer meaning word by word. And also translation needs a grammatical understanding. In fact, translation with merely transferring meaning will not produce a good translation.
It is just not these. In translating, it is necessary for understanding the content of the text to find the meaning of each word so that restructuring the sentences, is changing the transferring process from the source language to the suitable stylistic form of the receptor language (language of the readers and listeners), can be done and a flexible translation is reachable. As Bassnet writes: Beyond the notion stressed by the narrowly linguistic approach, that translation involves the dictionary and grammar, the process involves a whole of extra linguistic criteria also.
As Nababan said (1999: 30-46) that there are some kinds of translation, such as: word y word translation, free translation, aesthetic-poetic translation, ethnographic translation, linguistic translation, and communicative translation.
But by analyzing, it goes without saying that the translator used literal translation of the kind of translation. It is between word by word translation and free translation. It is used by translator because the sentences structure of the source language and the receptor language is different.
Not only kind of the literal translation that used by the translator but also she used the dynamic translation. I which, she transferred the main idea of the source language to the receptor language by common expressions.
In the first sentence, for example, exactly in clause “an argument had been broken out over breakfast”. In this issue, the translator gave a meaning “pertengkaran meledak di meja makan” in Indonesian language. It shows that she understood parts of speech and knew how to adjust them into the target language.
In translating, aesthetic-poetic translation is used by the translator, too. In which, her translation did not only give a priority to transfer the information, but also to impression, emotion, and feeling by considering aesthetic values of the receptor language.
According to me, in this case, the translator used the ethnographic translation, too. He describe the culture context of the source language into the receptor language . It was shown by the word “ M”, he changed it be “S” in Indonesian. And sometimes word by word translation was implemented by the translator too.
As a good translator, I feel, she really major the techniques of translation. It seems from the message of the context from the source language could be delivered well. She had passed processes for translating by source language text analysis, transfer meaning, and restructuring.
I think that she did complicated steps in translating English such as; analyze the kinds of the words, identify sentences, analyze sentences by determining the subject, predicate, object, adverb and also the compliment of the sentences. And also she restructured the sentences that does not have the same point well. Such as the sentence “ what have I told you”. In addition, the translator did translate until the level of idiomatic expression, proverb, and etc.
In this case, the translator knew the condition indeed, among them are level of complexity of the sentences, the content of the sentences, when the sentences must be used, with whom the sentences was used ( receptor, therefore, sentences could be expressed well.
Here, I really consider that the translator do translate this novel well. It is found from the result of the translation show that the language style was used can be understand by the readers or listeners. Also the translator pay attention to the culture of the receptor. She has understood usage of receptor by transferring the source language to the receptor language well and her translation can be understand clearly.
Based on the statement above, once again, I conclude that the translator do all of the techniques of the translation well and she had passed in utilizing some processes of translation. The evidences are all of the meaning and message of the source language text can be understood by transferring to the receptor language text without must distinguish meaning of the words of the source language so that the purpose is reachable. And finally, she could be produce the monumental works in the world of language.

"It’s Better to Use Informal Words in Translating Teenager’s Novel"
Indonesian, has two types of the use of language in writing; Formal and Informal. Formal forms are usually used in writing news, writing application, writing a letter to somebody else that is considered as our senior. However, informals are settled as our daily language whether in speaking or writing. For example: (speaking) in bahasa Indonesia my mom usually says “Dian! Bangun, mandi, belanja beliin ayam setengah kilo, sop-sopan dua ribu, sama beliin jajan buat dek Barra!” We can see that, everyday, everybody, I think, even if he is a president, or a minister, says to his or her children like that. Another example (writing), in writing a letter. I usually write : “Ika, gimana kabarmu? Baek-baek aja khan? Oia, kapan nih jalan-jalan lagi ke Semarang?”
But, we have to pay attention in using informal words. Because, it seems impolite if we use informal words when having a comprehension with our teacher or lecturer. Sometimes, they are easy to considered that we are impolite students or may be do not regard them as our teacher or lecturer.
In other hand, we are much better if we use informal words in writing teenager’s short story, teenager’s magazine, or even in translating them like translating “Chicken Soup for Teenager”, “Harry Potter”, “Narnia”, “Sheila”, etc.
Here, I write an analysis about translation chapter I of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”. Actually, JK. Rowling had written a pretty good novel that is famous as it was released in a Movie. We are suggested to read the novel first, then watch the movie to feel the differences between novel version and movie version. It’s okay if we do not do the suggestion because that is not the point of this article.
DISSCUSION
Before giving comments to the translation’s version, I read first the original version (in English) and then the Indonesian. When I read the original one, I feel that the situation and the feeling of Harry Potter is quite deep and so complicated. Of course it’s hard for me to know the meaning of the difficult words because of my limitation vocabularies. But. It’s okay that I had to open my dictionary to know the right meaning of that words or expression. Because, I was interested and enjoyed reading it.
I was so surprised because there were so many words are translated into not good dictions in Indonesian. As we know that Harry Potter is a novel for teenager. But the translation is used the formal language version and sometimes it is translated into difficult level of vocabularies, so it can change the meaning of the original say’s and not understandable, even sometimes we do not know the meaning of the each character say’s.
For example: “Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk” should be “Ulang Tahun Terburuk”. The use of word “paling” can be formal and informal, but I think, it is oriented in formal form. So, it should be changed into “ter-…”
The use of “Mr.” in the translation version: The writer should write “Pak”. I think, the writer forgot to translate it into Indonesian. So, it is still written in English.
The word “you” is much better changed into “kamu” not “kau”. Because, “kau” seems not Indonesian but seems oriented to Malay accent. And the word “tidak” should be “nggak”, because in Indonesia, most of teenagers are never say “tidak” but always say “nggak”.
It’s good if we do translation do not see first the punctuation. Because, sometimes there are so many comas (,) are used in English and those are put in wherever place between words, and when we read it we think that those are put in order place, but when those punctuations are written in the translation it seems ambiguous and have no meanings because of putting comas (,) like in the original do not pay attention to the meaning first. For example: “Harry mencoba, sekali lagi, untuk menjelaskan,….” We need not to write comas (,) so many times. It’s useless and difficult to understand. Sometimes, the reader reads it one by one “Harry mencoba….” Mencoba apa? , “sekali lagi….” Apanya yang sekali lagi , and “untuk menjelaskan” menjelaskan apa? . so, that should be “ Harry mencoba menjelaskan sekali lagi……” like that. I think it is much understandable and easy to read. And remember, it is informal. So, we can write it in Indonesian’s style.
CONCLUSION
There are so many criticisms that I have for that translation according to the formal informal that used in the translation version. However nobody is perfect, everybody can do mistakes and forget the things that they have learned before. But, if we think that we are not capable in translating, better we learn about it first, then let’s start our business. O.K!

Harry Potter and its Magical Power to gain Indonesian Reader
A lot of literature works are published every year. But none of the works are as fantastic as Harry Potter did. Harry Potter—the most wanted book in the world. Read by more than 500 million people in the world. The very inspiring book which can magically turn our world upside down with its sorcerer words in every single detail of the pages. We will no longer get bored by reading the book, we will no longer lingering in our room by entering its world and we will no longer live in the world if we miss one chapter of the book.
How this book can be so spectacular is because the author—Joanne Kathleen Rowling—makes it in the way that no one ever made—that no one even imagine. Our world is spun and turned upside down, that’s why we are addicted to these really remarkable novels. We can’t put down the book until we finish reading the whole book. That was awesome.
We, as Indonesian reader of Harry Potter sequel novels, are also being pleased with the books. In spite of Harry Potter are import novels, or a translation novels, it still made us scared, laugh, and cry at the same time. The successful selling of the books in Indonesia is not only on the author’s hand, but also need a very hard work from its translators. To translate a very big and famous novel is not an easy job. It needs skills.
Translator is a big job. To translate those million words of native (English) to Indonesian needs gallons of sweat, whereas we can not directly blame, or we, as a person who has read the original version of Harry Potter may be rather disappointed of the result of the translator’s job. Every person who makes a foreign novel, we may say so, to their native language novel bears a very hard burden, instead of a very large amount of money of course, needs to pay attention to the quality of the translation.
The quality of the translation can be measured by noticing such points:

In Harry Potter novel, especially chapter one of “Harry Potter and The Chamber of secrets”, the translator actually use the method of word to word translation. It means that in each word the translator translate the words precisely. For example,

You’ve forgotten the magic word…(paragraph 13)
Kau lupa kata sihirnya…
But the translator also uses the method of translating the meaning. For example:

Well, actually he can just say ”ketiga kalinya minggu ini” instead of “Untuk Ketiga Kalinya Minggu ini.” But Indonesian reader will comprehend the second phrase than the first, because the pattern of Indonesian is just like that.

If it is translated with a very sharp and contextual meaning, the phrase can be like this “operkan wajan itu”. That phrase would be very disturbing the reader, so that the translator takes action by giving the meaning, not word to word method anymore. and that method will be effectively done if the translator know when to use it.
Arrange word into a sentence, a full sentence, is important to tell the whole meaning of the story. The method is making new sentence but have the same meaning, or making it precisely with the native sentence.
WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU…
Bukankah sudah kularang…
The sentence above means the same instead of different word of translation. It is also called meaning method translation. “what have I told you” means something that I have told you. In Indonesian can be “apa yang sudah kubilang” and when the translator turns it into “bukankah sudah kularang” they axactly have the same meaning that is “what I have told you is warned you” Indonesian “apa yang sudah kubilang adalah melarangmu”
The two method used by the translator of Harry Potter novel is to be proven good. We as native Indonesian can understand what are meant by the author, who is not an Indonesian, and we as a person who ever read the original version of the book is also being pleased, because the words the translator choose is the fittest saying in Indonesian.
Indonesian reader of the novels will increase every each day if the quality of the translator and the translation is as good as now or better. And Indonesian reader won’t get bored with the other international novels or books. In addition we must have got something after we’ve read a book, any book. There’s no loss to read a book.

J.K. Rowling is a writer who has written a series of famous novels, Harry Potter. The novels are very popular and liked in all around the world. Most of people in many countries, either kids or even adults are eager to and interested in reading the novels. Therefore, the series of Harry Potter are translated into many languages of countries in the world and also translated in Indonesian language.
When I read the Indonesian text version of chapter one of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”, I thought that the quality of the translation of that text is good. I understood the plot of the story, so I enjoyed reading it. But, a translation, however, must be different with the original version, either the sense that is got during the reading or the use of word choices or dictions. They can be something determining whether the quality of the translation is good or not.
During the reading both version, I got same pictures of the setting, situation and feeling. It can be a proven that it is not an amateur translation because the translator can make the readers understand the story and what happened on it and according to me, it is a quite good translation.
But after reading the English version, and pay attention to the differences between both series carefully, it shows that apparently, there are some things that are different with the original in deciding the meaning. There are some sentences that have been translated in a little bit or exactly different meanings with the original text. It can make the story less interesting than the English version. For example, in a sentence “….his words were drowned by a long, loud belch from the Dursley’s son, Dudley.”, it can be translated into “kata-katanya tenggelam oleh sendawa yang keras dan panjang dari anak pasangan Dursley, Dudley”. But, in the text, the translator translated the sentence became, “kata-katanya tenggelam oleh sendawa Dudley yang keras dan panjang. Dudley adalah anak Mr. dan Mrs. Dursley. It is a correct sentence, but a little bit different with the original sentence and sounds not quite good because there is repetition of a word “Dudley”. In addition, as I know, a translator may choose the best words or dictions in translating a text to make it as interesting as the original, but he or she must not change the meaning. It perhaps will not be a problem if the readers of the books never read the original version, but if they did and found that there were some differences between both versions. As a result, they would think that the translation was not as accurate as the original one and so did the Harry Potter readers.
In translating a text, the words choice or the dictions also play an important role. During reading the English version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, I enjoyed it. The writer used words that could build up the readers’ imaginations as high as possible. The story seems great and incredible. The description of the places, characters, situations makes me imagined them as if they were real. For example, where the writer told about Lord Voldemort, she used words that showed horror. Then, I read the Indonesian text. It gives descriptions as well as the original. The translator translated every word accorded to the original text and described in detail every parts of the story using a lot of adjectives words so I could imagine it as well as when I read the English version.
So, in conclusion, the two versions of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, either the English or the Indonesian versions are good and interesting. Both, the writer and the translator, can bring the readers into a great and incredible imagination about a little wizard, Harry Potter, and his surroundings. Using the words, the writer created a story about magic that is fantastic, either did the translator. She wrote a good translation of Harry Potter novel. Although there are a few translation sentences that are less accurate than the English version, but over all, it’s a good translation because the readers can understand and imagine the story as well and interesting as the original text.

ANALYZING THE QUALITY OF TRANSLATION IN INDONESIAN LANGUAGE OF THE FIRST CHAPTER OF“HARRY POTTER A0ND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS”

The story told about a sequence of Harry Potter’s life. Harry potter indeed was an extraordinary boy. He was an orphan since he was at the age of one. He lived with The Dursleys. Actually they were his family, aunt Petunia was his dead mother’s sister. However, they never loved Harry because he was unusual. Harry was a wizard-a wizard fresh from his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Dursleys were what wizard called Muggles (not a drop of magical blood in their veins), and having a wizard in the family was a matter of deepest shame. Harry potter got his wizard blood from his parents whom had died in Voldemort’s attack –the greatest dark sorcerer of all time. Fortunately, Harry could escape with his lightning scar made by Voldemort, and nobody understood why Voldemort’s power had been destroyed the instant he had failed to kill Harry. Then, Harry was brought up The Dursleys without knowing the real history of his family. His uncle just told him that his parent died because of car crash. Exactly a year ago, when Harry was 11 years old, Hogwarts had written to him and the whole story had come out. Harry had taken up his place at wizard school, where he and his scar were very famous.
Harry Potter loved his wizard school so much. When the summer holiday came, he missed his school so much. Moreover now he had to be at home with his family, the Dursleys. He never felt at home, no one loved him there, even at his twelve birthday. No one remembered that moment. No one at that house, and also from his wizard school. It seemed like no one care about him. That was the worst birthday he ever had.
ANALYZING
In my opinion, the translation in Indonesian language of the first chapter of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” is a good translation. The translation can convey the concept and the meaning of the whole original story without making such kind of misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the reader.
The translator not only uses the faithful translation or word by word translation, but sometimes he also uses the free translation. By using these thee ways he can translate and convey meaning to the reader well.
I. Faithful Translation and Word to Word Translation
Overall, the result of these two kinds of translation is not really different. We can see that the translator translate the text from English to Indonesian by Word to word. The result of Faithful translation is not so far different. By using this way, he translates the text by giving the same lexical meaning of English and Indonesian language.
Some examples of this translation that we can find from the text are:
1. Not the first time = bukan untuk pertama kalinya
2. Mr. Vernon Dursley had been woken = Mr. Vernon Dursley telah terbangun
In this phrase, the translator still uses “Mr.” in his translation without changing into “Tuan” which has the same meaning in Indonesian. It is done in consideration that the Indonesian readers are familiar enough with the word, and by giving the real word “Mr.”, the translation is better, has more English taste and the most important is still understandable enough.
3. By a loud hooting noise from his nephew Harry’s room = oleh bunyi uhu-uhu keras dari kamar keponakannya, Harry.
Translator uses the word “uhu-uhu” to translate the word hooting in order to make it easier to be understood by the reader (he tries to balance it with Indonesian culture-it means the sound of owl in Indonesia-)
4. Third time this week = untuk ketiga kalinya minggu ini
5. If you can’t control that owl, it’ll have to go. = Kalau kau tak bisa mengontrol burung hantu itu, dia harus pergi.
The way the translator use the word ‘kau’ than ‘kamu’ and ‘tak’ than ‘tidak’ shows that he can find the match diction.
6. Harry tried, yet again, to explain = Harry mencoba, sekali lagi, untuk menjelaskan.
7. She’s bored, he said. = Dia bosan. Katanya.
II. Free Translation
Sometimes in translating English text to Indonesian, we can’t find the match word to explain / convey what is meant by the original author. Therefore, the translator tries to translate the original English text by giving his own Indonesian language words to avoid misunderstanding / misinterpreting of the reader. It is the way that proves the translator is brilliance. He can understand the original author’s meaning / concept and interprets it into Indonesian language that easily can be understood by the Indonesian language speaker well. He can find the right diction in Indonesian language.
Some examples of this translation that we can find from the text are:
1. an argument had broken out over breakfast at number four, Privet Drive = pertengkaran meledak di meja makan rumah Prive Drive nomor empat
2. He roared across the table = raungnya
3. I don’t like the sound of that school = aku tidak senang mendengar tentang makanan di sekolahmu
4. clapped her hands to her mouth = menutup mulutnya
5. he was as not normal as it is possible to be = dia memang sama sekali bukan anak biasa
6. not a drop of magical blood in their veins = tak memiliki setetes pu darah penyihir di nadi mereka
7. as far as they were concerned = bagi mereka
8. it is this scar that made = bekas luka inilah yang membuat
Those are a number of examples that we can see from the translation how the translator’s way / style in translating by using faithful, word to word and free translation.

An Analysis of the Translation of the First Chapter of “Harry Potter an the Chamber of Secret”
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret is the second novel of the Harry Potter series written by J. K. Rowling. The novels tell about the adventure of a young boy named Harry Potter, who was actually a wizard, and his life in the magic world. Harry Potter series are very amazing and well known around the world. They have also been translated in many languages. In Indonesia, these books were translated by Listiana Srisanti.
In the second novel, the story begins with Harry's twelfth birthday that was considered as the worst birthday of him. Instead of getting any presents or cards, he had to pretend not to exist since two important guests came to visit his uncle's house for a transaction. Talking about the quality of the translation of chapter 1 of “Harry Potter an the Chamber of Secret”, I find that the translator has succeeded in conveying the main massage of the author. However, there are some mistakes made in some sentences that I would discuss although these errors wouldn't change the content of the whole story. The translator sometimes translate it in word to word translation that caused the meaning different from the author meant. There are also some inappropriate translation of words or phrases appeared. Here are some examples of corrections I could suggest.
Firstly, the word “incredible” in the sentence “The effect of this simple sentence on the rest of the family was incredible” was translated “luar biasa”. In the dictionary of Echols and Shadily, there are two meanings of incredible, “luar biasa” and “tidak masuk akal”. The appropriate translation, according to me, is “tidak masuk akal”. It is because the word “luar biasa” is usually used to convey something amazing or great in positive connotation, while in this sentence Rowling meant that only because of simple sentence, the Dursley's reaction was too much.
Secondly, the sentence “WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU...ABOUT SAYING THE M WORD IN OUR HOUSE?” should be translated “Apa yang sudah aku bilang...tentang mengatakan kata 's' itu di dalam rumah kita?”. The translator shouldn't change the sentence in negation. It is not a warning, but a rhetorical question. That's why I don't think that the sentence used by the translator is appropiate.
There are some words or phrases translation that I consider inappropriate too. The word “graciously” which was translated “dengan anggun” should be “dengan ramah”. Then, “May I take your coats...?” should be “Bolehkah saya membawakan mantel Anda...?”.
In the sentence “Do tell me where you bought your dress, Mrs Mason...”, the translator added unnecessary sentence like “Gaun Anda indah sekali,...”. I think that sentence is not needed and there is actually a explicit compliment in the original text. It is better to be “Ceritakan padaku dimana Anda membeli gaun Anda, Mrs Mason..?” because the compliment is given implicitly.
The phrase “countless time” that was translated “sudah puluhan kali” should be “tak terhitung lagi” because there is no specific number in that sentence. The phrase “first couple of weeks back” should mean “beberapa minggu pertama yang lalu”, not “dua minggu pertama”.
As I mentioned above, although there are some errors, the reader would still understand the content of the story. On the other hand, the reader who have read the original novel in English would realize those errors. Needless to say, translating is difficult since there are some differences of culture and perception between the source language and the target language.
In conclusion, the translation of the chapter is pretty good. Some mistakes wouldn't change the plot of the story since the Indonesian readers can still enjoy it.

When the Messages Do Not Send
On my opinion the quality of the translation of chapter 1 of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” is good enough. Why I say like that? And why I do not says that the quality is very good? It is because the translator have already done their job by translated it. But they only translate the text and do not make the reader clearly enough to understand what they want to tells. Sometimes they translate word by word, and it was horrible because the text is not only word by word but it contain a messages that the translator must sends its messages and the full meaning to the reader so that the reader will understand what are the text about. Message is a written or spoke piece of information.
And when the messages do not send, it will implicate to the reason of the reader. People read an essay or a short story to get a satisfaction, and to refresh his/her mind after a day with a thousand activities, or just to get a new knowledge that they have not learn before, unfortunately, what they have got is only confusing. People needs to read, especially read a translation, but when the translation is confusing, what for?.
We all can imagine if the messages do not send. I will take an example from the text like this: “Get in here! And walk on the newspaper!” and the translator translates the text like this “Masuk! Dan berjalan di atas Koran! ”, although I am not a hundred percent sure, the meaning is true or false, I am a hundred percent sure that the reader will crack their eyebrows and think twice to make that sentence clear in mind. That sentence also contains ambiguity’s meaning. People may think: is there common people walk on the newspaper? Or what for people walk on the newspaper? If the translation is like that. And also the sentence “My perfect little gentleman!” the translator translates like this “Gentleman kecilku yang sempurna”. The word “gentleman” why does the translator also use “gentleman” on their translation? That will be all right if the reader is a university student or a business man. But I can not imagine if the reader is eight or ten years old children that have not learn English before, it is hard to understand I think, or maybe he/she will ask to their parents. Yes, if the parents can answer it, if not? It will become so complicated. I also can say that occasionally the translation is unacceptable.
In other case, sending messages clearly is very important. Hendro call his secretary and inform that he have a meeting with a group of women,--which no other is his business partner--after lunch. But suddenly his wife come to the office and asked to the secretary where her husband was, the secretary answered like this “Mr. Hendro has lunch with his ‘women’”. So we all can guess what will happen next. But I think that is a human error and can be tolerated. But what will happen if the error does so frequently. That will not be excused.
And also the important thing is the whole meaning. Some people may accept the opinion of; it does not matter whether the translation contains some errors. But others might not accept it, because they think that the errors will influence the whole meaning, and as a result, it will influence the whole messages. And myself, I agree with the opinion of it does not matter whether the translation contains some errors, why?. Because nobodies perfect.
Despite the translation text just only has a few mistakes in my opinion, depends on the fact that and messages is very important, I think the translator do their good job, but the translator must improve their ability about language and if necessary learn about some culture so that in the future the translator will not make any unnecessary mistakes. And I also think that this text is not only good for those who wants to read the translation of the book “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” for the children, old man, but also for the general society who wants to enjoy an adventures story about the magic.

Translation as the means to convey ideas from a native author to the target readers plays important role in making the atmosphere of a story or what an author wants to tell to the target readers. The result and quality of translations may vary from one translator to other ones. Sometimes the result of a translation has completely good quality or bad quality. And sometimes the result of a translation also has good quality but it consists both strong and weak points that can make the readers appraise the whole quality of the translation and emerge a little or big, a significant or insignificant questions or question. The little thing should be taken care by many translators to make good translation in order to convey the real intention of the native author to the target readers. In this case, I would like to analyze the quality of the translation of “Harry potter and the chamber of secrets” (chapter one).
First of all, I dare say that the quality of the translation of “Harry potter and the chamber of secrets” (chapter one) is quite good. However, as I previously mentioned in the first paragraph that sometimes a good translation has both strong and weak points, this translation has both of them. The components from the translation that I am going to discuss are the quality of translated characterization (the representation of persons in narrative and dramatic works), translated setting (the time and place of the events of a story or the background against which action takes place), translated point of view (the angle of vision from where the story is narrated), translated style (the expression trough a characteristic use of language of the author’s mind and personality, often lending unity and significance to the work of fiction) includes diction (the author’s choice of words), imagery (the use of vivid or figurative language to represent objects, actions, or ideas), and syntax (the way an author presents his/her story in sentences whether the author uses long of brief sentences, or employs simple, compound, or complex sentences), and the last component is translated mood or atmosphere (the feeling in mind that is created by the author).
So, what are the strong points of the translation?. They are, first, the quality of good translated characterization. The translator successfully translates the characterizations through describing the physical characters of each character using appropriate descriptive words that can invite the target readers to infer qualities from physical appearance. For example,..paman Vernon gemuk dan tanpa leher, dengan kumis hitam besar..(page 10), from the translated description of uncle Vernon, the target readers will imagine that he has a large body and neckless and also has an enormous black moustache. The second is the quality of exact setting. The translator successfully translates the illustrated setting through illustrating the surroundings or environment that helps shape the place and events, e.g.,… Harry keluar lewat pintu belakang. Cuaca amat cerah. Dia menyebrangi halaman, mengenyakkan diri di bangku kebun dan bernyanyi pelan..(page 14), from this illustration the target readers will guess that the event takes place in a garden with bench near lawn and the day is sunny. The third is the quality of absolute point of view. The translator successfully translates from where the story is narrated, that is third person point of view since the author narrates the story trough a narrator who tells all and seems to know all, it is also called omniscient third-person point of view. From the translation, the target readers are clearly able to differentiate between the voice of the narrator and the character like in the sentence…Harry berusaha membuat wajahnya serius ketika muncul dari bawah meja. “aku akan berada di kamarku, tidak membuat suara, dan pura-pura tidak ada di sana,” katanya..(page 14). The fourth is the quality of appropriate translated style. In this case, it includes diction, imagery, and syntax. Firstly I would like to analyze the diction. The author uses most denotation and fewer connotations in the story. Most words of the story use denotation and maybe one of connotations like in the word membayar mahal (page 17) has a connotative meaning that is receiving worst consequences. The next is about imagery. The story contains some imageries especially figurative imagery. Figurative imagery compares between an inanimate object and an animate object or gives or attributes human traits to inanimate objects. Some of them include personification (giving human traits to inanimate objects) like in the sentence… sejak tadi, sambil melamun, dia memandang pagar tanaman – dan pagar itu balas memandangnya..(page 16). And also simile (comparison using ‘like’-seperti- or ‘as’-bagaikan) like in the sentence…diperlakukan seperti anjing yang habis…(page 11) and in the sentence paman Vernon duduk kembali, tersengal seperti badak bercula satu yang kehabisan napas (page 9). And then next is about syntax. In terms of the length of sentences, the story contains short, spare, and economical or long and involved sentences. While in terms of the form of sentences, the story contains simple, compound and complex sentences. And the last component is about translated mood or atmosphere. The translator successfully translates the whole text that bring the readers involve into the story whether in the situation of fun, annoyed, even sad.
A question comes to us latter is what are the weak points then?. As I previously mentioned that this translation has strong points, it also has weak points that will be discussed. First, the problem comes from the sentence…Dudley adalah anak Mr dan Mrs Dursley (page 8). The words Mr and Mrs, actually, can be translated become Tuan and Nyonya. The same problem comes from the sentence “boleh ku simpan mantel anda, Mr dan Mrs mason?” (page 12). The answer will be the same as the answer from the first problem and still many similar problems around the paragraph. And the next problem comes from the sentence “MUUUUUUM” raung Dudley,…(page 17) and “MUUUUM! Dia melakukan yang tak boleh itu!”..(page 17). I think Dudley’s yelling “MUUUUM” can be translated become “IBUUUU” or “MAAMI”. I do not know exactly whether the translator kept the original culture conveyed by the author or he missed them, but I would suggest the translator to translate completely the whole text for the target readers come from all ages and various educational background.
In short, I would like to say once more that this ii quite good translation since it can convey the author’s intentions through the qualities of translated characterization, setting, point of view, style, and mood or atmosphere as the strong points. However, it has some weak points that have been stated in the paragraph above. I also would suggest the translator to translate completely the whole text since the target readers come from all ages and various educational background.

The Analysis of The Chapter 1 of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”
The text is the chapter 1 of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” tell about Harry’s worst birthday with Dursleys for the summer. He felt so lonely, no cards, no presents, and he would be spending the evening pretending not to exist. But I would not discuss more about the content, I would like to discuss its translation in Indonesian here.

a) Here I can see that the translator can translate based on the context well. For examples :
…He exchanged dark looks with…
....Dia bertukar pandang geram pada....
Why did the translator translate ”dark looks” into “pandang geram”? not to “pandang gelap” even “melihat gelap”. Because the context show that Mr. Vernon and Aunt Petunia was be angry with Harry, so the proper phrase is “pandang geram”.
b) In other hand, examples here give me other opinion. I think the words which used by the translator are improper, even missunderstanding as following :
by a loud, hooting noise from his nephew Harry’s room.
oleh bunyi uhu – uhu keras dari kamar keponakannya, Harry.
At the first time i red this text, I red word ’uhu – uhu’. First I think that is a sound of people had got a cough. Actually not. That is a sound of an owl. I know the translator had been chosen that word to make it understand easier, but may be the word is not exactly.

Sometimes in translation, the translator have to add some words, in order to give an compliment to the preceding words to make a clear illustration as following :

Missing words
For example :
A joint of roast pork was sizzling…
Daging panggang sedang berdesis…
Actually, ‘pork’ itself is daging babi. So I think it would be clearer and complete that ‘daging babi panggang’.
Untranslated words
Words are not translated because if you change into other language, it will not quite get the moment of it. For example :
” My perfect little gentleman!” sniffed Aunt Petunia..
“Gentleman kecilku yang sempurna,” kata Bibi Petunia terharu.
It show that the aunt is very proud of her nephew, so she called him with ‘gentleman’
..”Happy birthday to me…”
It is a song to show how the character’s feeling when he sang this song.
Changing form
I notice that the translator change the form of the sentence here. That doesn’t change the meaning, but it will be lost the impression of the sentence. For example :
What wouldn’t he give now for a message from Hogwarts? From any witch or wizard ?...
Dia rela memberikan apapun untuk mendapatkan kabar dari Hogwarts. Bahkan kabar dari penyihir manapun.
I think it would be better that ‘Apa sih yang tidak bakal dia berikan untuk mendapatkan kabar dari Hogwart? Bahkan kabar dari penyihir manapun? (if in informal sentence)

I think it is not enough to illustrate the situation of the moment is written by the author ‘it was brilliant, sunny day’…I think it would be better that ‘cuaca teramat sangat cerah…because it will be lost the impression of the sentence.

It would be better that ‘a fierce voice’ is translated ‘suara yang dahsyat’
CONCLUSION
Based on the result of my analysis the translation in Indonesia Language of the chapter 1 of “Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets”, I can draw conclusion as the following:
It’s translation is good, but not excellent. It is good because the text has been translated can be understood by the readers. And why is it not excellent? Because there were some improper words that make me unconvenient when I red it. Even I did not quite feel the feeling of this. The translator did not quite emphasize the important noun phrases (NP) that can built the readers’ imagination and feeling. It didn’t same with the emotion feeling from the original text.

World of literature always produces great works during the time and “Harry Potter” is one of famous literature works. The Harry Potter series of fantasy novels by Joanne Kathleen Rowling books which is from Scotland have become some of the most widely-read works of children's literature in history, with readers of all ages and in many countries. Worldwide sales of Harry Potter books are estimated at over 300 million copies. As such, the books have been widely translated from the original into other languages.
J.K. Rowling have proved her capacity as a brilliant novelist by producing this great novel. Most people around the world interest and admit the quality of this special book. Not only children but also adult and old people like it.
“Harry Potter” book in Indonesia version is very helpful for Indonesian People. The readers will be able to understand the story of Harry Potter completely from the beginning until the end. I am sure that Listiana Srisanti as an translator has used her all capability to translate the original book of “Harry Potter” (English version) into Indonesia.
In this case, I would like to analyze the translation of the second book of Harry Potter “The Chamber Of Secret” especially about Chapter one “The Worst Birthday”. In my opinion, the main factor of a good translation is the interpretation way of translator. Exactly, this essential element of translation should be applied in her translation. the reader will accept the result of the translation if she apply the right way to interpret the content of the book. That is why a translator should have that skill well.
This translation of “Harry Potter” is good. It is not easy to translate a foreign (English) book into Indonesian language. Listiana Srisanti tries to to use her knowledge especially grammar and vocabulary. She tries to arrange some words into clear sentences. This translator uses good style of language. It is communicative and acceptable for all people in different age because as we know that most people in all age love this wonderful novel. After reading this translation, I can feel the same situation and condition when I read the original text.
Harry Potter is a story which has a lot of series, at least there are 150 pages of each book. It goes without saying that it needs long time to finish it, the ease for readers to understand the whole story clearly should be the priority. In this case, translator’s decision to choose right diction is very important. In general, word arrangements of this translation which are used by the translator is very good. He does not translate textually but he tries to construct good sentences word by word. The translator chooses the appropriate words that the meaning is equal with English version. She uses words that can represent the English words well because English is can not be translated directly without any understanding the whole text. The words which is chosen by her is good, making the story understandable. However, in my opinion there are some words is rather in appropriate. For example : “hooting noise” is translated by “uhu-uhu”. It will be better if she translate it by “suara batuk”. Based on my experience, when I read that word in the beginning of the first paragraph, I can not get the point at once. So I must repeat it again. Besides that problem, the translator still uses English language to translate it. I know that it is acceptable but I thing\k it will be better if she tries to translate it the whole text in Indonesian Language. For example ; “Mum” is still translated by “mum not “bu” or “mam”, and “dad” is still translated by “dad” not “ayah” or “Bapak”.
Furthermore, other important element of translation is unity and coherence. Actually, whole process of story must be included unless it can make different perception with the original one. This translation constructed by Listiana Srisanti involved every parts of the story, I am a reader can feel and experience the plot of the this story “Harry Potter” completely as if I can see it in the real life. However, there is a part that the translator ignores it. She translate the whole text without any exception. There is any part that is omitted. There is even additional interpretation to make the reader understand it clearly. For example ; “kesannya seperti babi” which actually that statement is not stated explicitly in the original text.
In short, this translation is very good. Most people including me, can accept it. I am able to understand it easily. The translator ; Listiana Srisanti, tries to show the “Harry Potter, The Chamber of Secret” in Indonesian Language well and naturally.

An Essay Analyzing of the Quality of Translation the First Chapter of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret”
That question might be asked by some people who had read both the original and the Indonesian version of this book. They said that the original version give the more amazing description about Harry’s world and life while the Indonesian version is lifeless. Those books are the same, aren’t they? So, why is it so different? The quality of the translation might be the proper answer.
When I read the both version, the original version and Indonesian one, of the first chapter of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret”, then compare them, I found many differences between them. Translating is not only how to change one language to another but also how to conveyed the same purpose of the text to the reader in different language which have different culture and style in speaking. I think the translator of this book, besides a good understanding to the text, he must master Indonesian well so the reader can understand the translation clearly, and however, it may not change its expression meaning in English.
In the Indonesian version of Harry Potter’s book, there are some misinterpretation meanings and cutting words that I found. For instance, the translator often wrote “Privet Drive”, some readers might be not understood with the meaning of this words especially word “drive”. Firstly, some reader might be thought that “drive” in this book means “menyetir” in Indonesian, while the real meaning of this word in Indonesian is “jalan”. For those who master English well, they will not get some difficulties in interpreting the meaning of the word. However, the reader of harry potter in Indonesia not only them, the people who does not have any knowledge of English will so confuse and, of course, this confusion will decrease the joy of the reading.
Actually, every language has their style of speaking and also some different idiom. In translate a text, the translator must consider about it too, unless they cannot get a good translation. The use of idiom, especially, has many variations in every language. For example, if we want to say that something is easy in English we can use idiom ‘a piece of cake’. Nevertheless, if we translate it in Indonesian, without considering the difference between an idiomatic culture in English and Indonesian, the reader will not catch what the author meant by those words. And actually I found some mistaken of idiomatic phrase in this translation.
In ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret’ I found that the translator cut some words which, according to me, is important to give the more impact of the text. For example, at page 12 paragraph 3 last sentence of the original version, the author describe about Lord Voldemort, however in Indonesian version one of the description is left. The author spelled, “remembering his livid face, his wide, mad eyes …”, but in the translation, it’s only spelled, “teringat wajahnya yang pucat kelabu, matanya yang liar…” where is the “his wide”? Other word which is lost is word “four-poster” in page 8 line 31 while, I think, the author use this word to give more description of the story.
Another problem of this translation is the translator often uses ineffective word. For example, in Indonesian version page 15 the last line of the first paragraph, the translator wrote “datang menginap”, in English maybe it’s correct to say “come and stay”, however, I think it sounds ineffective to say “datang menginap” in Indonesian, because I think the meaning is clear enough if translate “come and stay” as “menginap” only. Other example is in the phrase “the greatest dark sorcerer ...”, it translated as “penyihir hitam jahat terhebat …” , especially the words “hitam jahat” I think the translator should use one of those words only, because according to me it represent enough the meaning of the author. Besides it sounds little bit strange when he use those words together since in Indonesian “hitam” is the color to represent “jahat”.
So many correction in the first chapter only and might be it’s not all of the shortage in this translation. How about the other chapter of this book? How about the other sequel of this book? If J. K. Rowling could speak
Indonesian she might feel so upset of this translation. Since her book become tasteless in Indonesian.
In translating, there are some theories that have to master by the translators. However, in some translation books which I have read, the translator just change the language without conveyed the same message of the author by their books and its make the books lost the taste and lifeless for me as the reader.

OF CHAPTER ONE
OF "HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS"
The English version of Chapter One of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret is very dramatic. The readers are drifted by their selves' imagination. The author, J.K Rowling used her best technique in writing the amazing story. The readers can feel that Harry Potter and all other things in the novel are true, real, and exist in this world. If they realize that there is no such thing in this world which is same with the thing in the story, they will wonder, how if there is Hogwarts? how if I am accepted by Hogwarts? and the other questions will appear.
The series of Harry Potter novel has been translated into many languages, one of which is Indonesian. In my opinion, the Indonesian version is good enough. I read Harry Potter for the first time in the Indonesian version. I can feel the "magic". But after reading the English version, there is something different. Here, we can compare between the original versions of Harry Potter with the translated version in Indonesian.
From the chapter one of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret, in the English version and the Indonesian version, I find some points that need to be concerned.
After reading both of the passages, I can feel that the English version is more dramatic. It can bring the readers to their deep imagination. The English version uses more adjective phrase, the impression that is resulted is deeper. On the other hand, the Indonesian version just translate globally, adjectives that are used are less. It seems that the goal of the translator is that the readers understand what is in the text. He should consider the needed of the reader for the deep imagination. We can see it from some sentences:
English version : a thin, lightening-shaped scar
Indonesian version : luka berbentuk sambaran kilat
I think the translator still can make it more dramatic, so the readers can imagine how the scar is.
Some part in the Indonesian version also cut a sentence into two sentences. I think it's not appropriate with the original text. May be the meaning is not changed, but one more time, it influences how the readers imagine the situation in the text. By cutting the sentence, the readers will feel that their imagination is interrupted by the full stop sign. In one sentence, the author can bring the readers in a situation where the author explains all about the one thing, in every single part, without any interruption from the full stop sign. I find two sentences in the English version, which are cut into two sentences for each in the Indonesian version; both are in page 11 of the Indonesian version.
Translation is influenced by culture. In the first page, Harry called his owl by using pronoun she/her. He did this because in west culture, people sometime use human pronoun for non-human things if it is very close to them. But in Indonesia, the word "dia" is enough to replace the third-party.
The Indonesian version also misses one little thing like adverb of place in the page 10 of the English version. There, uncle Vernon said that he would lead them into the lounge. But in Indonesian, the translation just…Aku akan membawa mereka masuk…. It is not explained, where Uncle Vernon will lead the Massons to.
There are also some differences in the use of noun and pronoun. Sometimes in English, the word used is pronoun but in the Indonesian, the translator uses noun. For example in the page 10, in the English version is written: "They'll love him!" cried Aunt Petunia rapturously. But in Indonesian, it is written like this: "Mereka akan menyukai Dudley!" seru Bibi Petunia terpesona. Maybe the translator did this because he was trying to adjust the culture or habits of the use of name.
From the explanation above, I can conclude that in the process of translating a passage, there must be a displacement in the meaning, although it is very little, but there must be a displacement. Furthermore, the way translators translate the passage using different techniques so the result between one translator with another will be different. Maybe one translator uses word-to-word translation and another uses contextual translation. The result of their translations will be different. Translators consider about the factors that must be focused on. One of them is habits and culture. How culture can influence the result of someone's translation.

There are many novels which have been translated into Indonesian language recently, including books from Harry Potter series. Although there are several changes like addition and missing words from the original version in an English novel translation, the changes should not be significant. It also can not be done to the elements which are important in the novel such as the intrinsic elements. To find what changes are made from English novel and how the quality of the translation version is, an analysis of the English and Indonesian versions can be done.
This paper is about how the quality of the translation of the text of the chapter 1 of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”. It is entitled “The Worst Birthday”.
I had read both the two versions, the English and Indonesian ones. I analyze them by comparing both the two texts. That is how the translator has solved the particular elements of the novel. They are the title, the structure, the proper names, the ‘untranslatable’ words, and the level of the language.
Generally, the Indonesian version is easy to understand because the use of Indonesian language is very clear. However, how about the particular elements of that chapter are, there are
1.The Title. It is a good translation. “The Worst Birthday” is translated into “Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk”. It is acceptable and understandable.
2.The Structure. The structure of the Indonesian version is still the same with the original one. It is because the plot of the story is the same with the original version or no changes.
3.The proper Names. No change is in the proper Names. The translation version is still used the original names of the characters, and the places. For example, Harry Potter, Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, Hogwarts and Privet Drive.
4.The ‘Untranslatable’ words. There are some words that should not be translated and they do not change what the author means. For example, “Jiggery pokery!”, and “Hocus pocus…squiggly wiggly…” (They are acceptable because they are kinds of magic words) and “Happy birthday to me…happy birthday to me” (it is acceptable and understandable because it is a common song and everybody knows the meaning).
5. The Level of Language.
a)I think that there are some words and sentences in context which are not appropriate to what the author means. Actually, they do not change the whole story. They are: “an argument had broken out over….” I think the word ‘argument’ is better to be translated with the word ‘percekcokan’ not ‘pertengkaran’. If the translator translates it with ‘pertengkaran’, the readers will understand that there is a physical fighting. But, I think what the author meant by the word ‘argument’ is a quarrel (cek-cok).And the phrase “Countless time”, the translation version is “Sudah puluhan kali”. I think it will be better “Sudah tak terhitung lagi” because it is not tens of time.
b)There are also changes like reduction, addition, and modification. They are:
-Reduction, 1) “remembering his livid face, his wide, mad eyes….” The translator didn’t translate the word ‘wide’, he just translated that sentence into “mengingat wajahnya yang pucat kelabu, matanya yang liar”. The last phrase should be “matanya yang besar dan liar”. 2) “....Harry had been thinking himself….” The translator didn’t translate the word ‘himself’, he just translated it into “sedang Harry pikirkan...” it should be “sedang Harry pikirkan tentang dirinya". But, I think they do not change the whole story because you will see what Harry have been thinking on the next sentence.
-Addition, “We’ll be shopping for a holiday home in Majorca this time tomorrow”, the phrase “this time tomorrow” is better to be translated into ‘pada jam ini esok hari’ not ‘jam sekian besok malam’. And the addition word ‘malam’ is not appropriate because if you read the following paragraph, you will find that it was a brilliant, sunny day.
-Modification, the sentence ‘Harry hadn’t told the Dursley this; he knew it was only their terror that he might turn them all into dung beetles that stopped them locking him…’ if we translated it by no modification, it would be ‘Harry tidak menceritakan hal ini kepada keluarga Dursley; dia tahu ini hanyalah sebuah gertakan yaitu dia akan mengubah mereka semua menjadi kumbang pupuk, gertakan yang mencegah mereka untuk mengunci dirinya…’ but the translator did modification, and didn’t change the meaning, it becomes ‘Harry tidak memberitahukan hal ini kepada keluarga Dursley. Mereka takut dia akan mengubah mereka menjadi kumbang pupuk. Dan Harry tahu, rasa takut itulah yang mencegah mereka mengunci dirinya…’
In conclusion, the quality of the translation of the chapter is a good translation. Although there are some words which are not appropriate to what the author means, generally it is acceptable, easy to understand, the message can be drawn correctly. To say the least, the Indonesian version is still on the line with the original one. It means that they do not change what the author tries to establish the characters, and the situation of the novel. Not to mention, it does not create any other interpretations.

An Essay Analysis of the Translation of the First Chapter of “Harry Potter an the Chamber of Secret”
Translation is the activity of translating from one source of language into another target source of languages. The way of translating itself must pay attention to the language principles and must comply with them in term of morphology and semantic. The usage of both of them will be concerned with the translation of Harry Potter The Chamber of Secret by J.K. Rowling that has been translated into Indonesian by Listiana Srisanti as the translator. In the labour the point of talking about the quality of her translation of this book is needed take time and must be took a further analysis and placed in a specific discussion. However, after scanning the first chapter of this book which is entitled “The Worst Birthday” I had a notion that the quality of her translation is masterful in cases where many of good aspects that support its quality in this translation. Those good aspects are the five categories of reading skills, that is to say:
First, the translator here used an appropriate ways of translating in deducing the meanings of words from contexts of Harry Potter The Chamber of Secret which is shown on chapter one “The Worst Birthday”. It is shown at the contrastive sentence as is on “I never went hungry when I was at smeltings” is translated to “Aku tak pernah kelaparan waktu aku di Smeltings”. One that comes to mind is not formally in translating it that indicates on the usage “Aku” here not “Anda”, but as the definition of the translation as the introductory of this analysis is simply shown that in translating one words or the whole sentences on the target language must be in the respect of the ideas of source native language itself without spiced with additional erroneous ideas that having an in with the final result quality of translation itself. On the other hand, others aim of the translator here to translate the everyday slang or figures of speech based on the original book.
Second, the quality of her translation is shown in understanding the forms and meanings of non-idiomatic phrases. Many of noun phrases are translated to a nicety like on “a joint of roast pork (daging asap). A salmon-pink cocktail (gaun malam berwarna merah jambu salem)”. It is so clear that the expertise of the translator is indispensable. The talented translator will be so significant and recognize the different situation whenever take the same ideas as the author in translating it into the different language. Similarly when she doesn’t use another replacement in the words “Jiggery pokery!. Hocus pocus… squiggly wiggly…” to the result of translation in the target language. The other hand, when the author used the exclamation “MUUUUUUM!” the translator here simply copied as same as the author’s aim.
Third, the other way to make certain about the quality of this translation is to take a look in the third skill about understanding sentence meaning through syntactical structures. In the main of this translation if we look based on the third skill, the translator is very brilliant in placing a certain meaning of “(M)agic” is replaced with “(S)ihir” as the output of her translation in the chapter one that simply shown at the sentences ‘ABOUT SAYING THE M WORD IN OUR HOUSE?’ so-and-so the expertise of the translator is indispensable. The grammar ability specially syntax ability is very required by the translator here that function as the main element of sentences. In transposing them is very fatal if the translator does not have a sufficient ability in syntax. The result and the quality of translation will be very poorly exactly to the readers if the translator does not pay attention of its rules.
Next, three skills that are mentioned above do not enough to support the measurement of the quality of this translation. The other indicator is “recognizing and understanding rhetorical structures.” Rhetorical structures are the way of combination between the functional meanings, which is drawn by the elements of language, based on a text. This rhetorical structures could be found on the degree or level of sentences, paragraphs, or inline with sentences, and on the level of the text overall. Please look on this translation; there is a lot of figure of speech and sophisticated sentences that will always be show up in text like on “…, back to being treated like a dog that had rolled in something smelly.” That figure of speech indicates a hyperbole, which means Harry Potter was being treated very and very bad by his stepparents.
Finally, the last but not least the translation has applied her fifth skill that is Critical Reading skill on her translation. I could say here that her translation is enormous. She is very brilliant in appraising written form and speech of the author. Exactness in using the words, phrases, sentences, and expression, in developing frame of thought, sequences the sentences, relevant or irrelevant information. Those overall has become a good value of her translation quality.
This appears to be a good quality of translation, which has made by talented translator. We must be proud of her masterwork.

Analyzing The Quality of The Translation of “Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets” Chapter 1: “The Worst Birthday”
In this essay, I will try to analyzing the quality of the translation of chapter 1: The Worst Birthday from a novel entitled Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets. In my opinion, the whole translation of the first chapter of Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets is good. The translator of this chapter did a great job in translate it. But in several part of the translation, the translator did something that make me who had read both the original text and the Indonesia version fell little bit weird. Because the translation, for me, fell uncomfortable to read.
The good thing from this translation is the way the translator translate the original text into Indonesia. I must say that the translator had done a great job to make the Indonesia version of this chapter acceptable for Indonesian ears. The translation tries to make this chapter easy to understand because the reader of Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets not only adult and elder but also teenager and children. The translator did some change in translate the original text to make the sentences easier to understand by the readers. The translator translates the original text not word by word. The translator makes some changes in the Indonesia version to make the sentence sound smooth in Indonesians ears. For instance, in the original text it written like this (pages 12), “What wouldn’t he give now for a message from Hogwarts?”And in the Indonesia version, the translator translate it like this (pages 16), “Dia rela memberikan apa pun untuk mendapatkan kabar dari Hogwarts”. From the example, we can see that the translator did not translate the original sentence literally. The translator did change sentence but it is not change the meaning of that sentence. According to me if the translator translated the sentence literally or word by word, the sentence will sound weird. And what the translator did with the translation of that sentence makes that sentence more dramatic and acceptable for Indonesian ears.
The other good thing is that the translator did not translate all original text into Indonesia. For example, “Happy birthday”. It was a good decision not translates it into “Selamat Ulang Tahun”. The readers from Indonesia are familiar with “Happy birthday” so it is unnecessary to translate it.
On the other hand, the translator did some translate, according to me, that sound weird. For instance, in the first paragraph, the translator translates “....a loud, hooting noise.....” into “bunyi uhu-uhu keras....” That sentence, in my opinion, is not appropriate to use because not all the readers of Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets know the meaning of that sentence, especially children. Not all readers know that “bunyi uhu-uhu” is the sound of an owl. The translator should give more explanation for that sentence or use other word to translate it without changing the meaning.
Another example is in original text the sentence like this “You’ve forgotten the magic word.” And in the Indonesia version, that sentence becomes “Kau lupa kata sihirnya”. For that translation, I don’t what to say. When I read that sentence I laughed because it sounds awkward. It is true that “magic” in Indonesia is “sihir” but in that sentence, I think, the translation is not “sihir”. “Magic word” in that situation is explained in the next paragraph that is “please”. If the translation of “magic” is “sihir”, I think it will refer to spell or hocus pocus. In Indonesian culture, we are not use that kind of technical term, “magic word”. So it makes the readers who do not know kind of term will fell confuses because at the first the word is “kata sihirnya” but in the next paragraph what means with “kata sihirnya” is “tolong”.
The translator also did some translate that not translate all the words of the sentence but what the translator did make the readers cannot fell or imagine the situation in the story. For instance, the translator translates the sentence “sleeping in his four-poster bed in the tower” into “tidur di tempat tidurnya di menara asrama”. The translator did not translater word four-poster and in my opinion what the translator did is not right, wrong choice to not translate that words. As the reader, we cannot imagine Harry’s bed has four-poster because in Indonesia version that word is missing, we only imagine that Harry’s bed is just like ours, nothing special about the bed in Hogwarts.
In short, the translation of Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets Chapter 1: The Worst Birthday is good. Even though the translator did some, I can say, mistakes, the translator did not change the contain of the story. The translator can make the translation of Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets easy to understand and acceptable or appropriate with Indonesian culture.

INTRODUCTION
Translation is not just changing a text for example, from one language to other languages. Translation is not delivering meaning of a text from one language into other languages but translation is delivering the intention of the text so that the text can be understood. That is the most important point. This essay presents the quality of the translation of chapter one of “ Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets : The Worst Birthday “ by looking the goodnesses and the lacknesses sides to conclude whether the translation is good or not.
CONTENT
The quality of the translation of chapter one of “ Harry Potter and he Chamber of Secrets “ can be said as a good or bad translation if only we have analysized it, understand the goodnesses and the lacknesses of it. After the we have reasons why we say that the translation is good , very good , bad , or very bad.
There are some goodnesses that can be the reasons why we say that the quality of the translation of chapter one of “ Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” in Indonesian version is good. The first reason is the translation shows that the translator is successful in telling the atmosphere or situation of the story. The translation in Indonesian version gives the same atmosphere or situation after I read it and I compared with the English version. For example, in the direct speech when Uncle Vernon angry Harry,
“ HOW DARE YOU THREATEN DUDLEY !”, road Uncle Vernon, pounding the table with his fist.
It is translated into Indonesia becomes
“ BERANI – BERANINYA KAU MENGANCAM DUDLEY !”, raung Paman Vernon, menggebrak meja dengan tinjuannya.
After I compared these both sentences, I could feel the same feeling and I sould easily imagine how angry Uncle Vernon to Harry at that time. It proves that the translation in Indonesian version is very good.
The second reason, the translation is successful in describing each character in the story. After reading the translation, I could understand the appearances or characteristics of the characters. And all the characteristics mentioned match with the characteristics in the English version. How the characteristics of Harry, Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and Dudley are clearly described. For instance, sentence which describes Dudley,
“ Dudley, who was so large his bottom drooped over either side of the kitchen chair,…….”
This sentence in Indonesian version is
“ Dudley, yang luar biasa gemuknya sampai – sampai pantatnya melimpah di kiri kanan kursi dapur,……”
And the translation in Indonesian version seems to be interesting to read because the translator is very clever in emphasizing the humor side of the story. It makes the readers want to read more and more. Especially the part of the story when Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and Dudley prepared or talked about the schedule to welcome the coming of Mr. and Mrs. Mason. In other word, the translation has an attractiveness which can attracts to read the next part.
There is also a lackness of this translation. Although it is not as much as the goodnesses, but in my point of view, there is a lackness especially in term of dictions that are used in the translation in Indonesian version.
We can see some examples in the text. First, the uses of Mr and Mrs ( Mr. and Mrs. Mason ) in the translation. Actually, Mr and Mrs can be translated into “ Tuan “ and “ Nyonya “ in Indonesia because it is Indonesian version. The same case can be found in the using of “ Dad “ and “ Mum “. Although it does not affect to the meaning or intention but it will be better if they are translated. Another example of lackness in diction term is the word “ fat “ that always translated into “ gemuk “ in Indonesia. We can see it in the text, “ fat bottom “ becomes “ pantatnya yang gemuk “ ,” fat face “ becomes “ wajahnya yang gemuk “. It is quite boring and does not appropriate. May be, it is better if we use “ sangat besar “ to emphasize the humor side in describing it. For example, “ fat bottom “ translated into “ pantatnya yang sangat besar “.
CONCLUSION
Finally, base on the analysis and understand both goodnesses and lacknesses, we can conclude that the translation of chapter one of “ Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets : The Worst Birthday “ is quite good. Since the translation can deliver the intention of the text completely. Although there are some lacknesses in the uses of dictions but they do not affect too much to the intention, they do not make another interpretation of the intention from the reader.

A translation script can be published when that script is regarded as a proper script to be published. There are several aspects that are the indicators of the script properness measurement. They are readability and legibility, consistency, grammaticality, attractive literary style, and correctness of facts and data.
The translation script of Listiana Srisanti, the translator of Harry Potter books which are written by Joanne Kathleen Rowling have filled all of the script properness that can be published. The following paragraphs will be given some examples that the translation scripts of Harry Potter books are proper to be published. I will focus this analysis on Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret, the second book, particularly on the chapter one, The Worst Birthday.
There is no a word or even a letter that typed not correctly. It makes the script can be categorized as a readable and legible script. This script is consistent, too. For example, Harry Potter family from a muggle (person who is not a drop of magical blood in their veins) world always says the word “magic” just with a letter “M”. “Magic” means “sihir” in Indonesia. Listiana Srisanti uses “S” to substitute “M”.
Indonesian language not always uses SPOC function labels to judge whether a sentence is grammatical or not. This script is always grammatically correct. All people that can use Indonesian language will always understand what the writer will deliver to the reader. For instance, in the sentence that was spoken by Harry, “You’ve forgotten the magic word.” If it translated originally into Indonesian, the sentence would be “ Kau telah melupakan kata sihirnya.” However, the translator translates it into Indonesian language such the sentence, “Kau lupa kata sihirnya.” Both the first and the second sentence are grammatically correct and can be used. But it is done by the translator to make the sentence sounds natural and it is grammatically correct in Indonesian. In addition, Listiana Srisanti uses a formal and polite language. So the readers will fell comfortable every time they read it. Besides this script has an attractive literary style, too. For example in the sentence, “… kembali diperlakukan seperti anjing yang habis berguling – guling di sampah bau” to translate “… back to being treated like a dog that had rolled in something smelly.” It has an implicit meaning that people exactly know what that is.
This script always idolizes the correctness of facts and data. For instance in paragraph one is said “… pertengkaran meledak di meja makan rumah Privet Drive nomor Empat.” In the original text, the breakfast table is not said directly in paragraph one. It is said, “… an argument had broken out over breakfast at number four, Privet Drive. But it is said after the first direct sentence is delivered. The sentence is, “ Third time this week!” he roared across the table. It has proved that Listiana Srisanti attends to the details of each word in the story.
Besides those aspects the creativity of the translator is one of the requirement of a translation script properness of a good translation text result. This creativity is based on the mission of the original text. It means that the translation script must be able to deliver the message that the original text will give.
In the chapter one of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret, Joanne Kathleen Rowling would present that it was Harry Potter’s worst birthday in his life. It showed through the events that describe Harry Potter’s bad luck at that day.
As I said before, Harry Potter has the worst birthday ever. Not only have the Dursley’s completely forgotten about Harry turning 12, but also Uncle Vernon has his boss over for dinner in order to complete a very important sales deal. This means that Harry has to spend the evening sequestered in his room, making no noise and pretending he doesn’t exist. He has gotten no cards, and no presents, and feels absolutely invisible. As he dully scuttles up to his bedroom when the guests arrive he’s surprised to find there’s a strange creature already sitting on his bed.
Listiana Srisanti describes the each event of Harry Potter’s bad luck into details. So the readers can understand the story without missing the details of event even only a little detail.
In short, translation is delivering the meaning of one language into another language totally. And Listiana Srisanti has done her job well.

How Great the Quality of the Translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets of Chapter 1
Many English novels are translated into Indonesian directly. Since the beginning of the reform era in Indonesia, many publishers have published translated versions books. As an impact, many English texts and books are translated into Indonesian versions by more than a translator and published by more than a publisher. Consequently, some of the translation cannot be easy to understand. This can be happen when the translators have not got mastery in both languages well or they do not posses the principles of translation. For that reason, comparing several different translated versions of an English novel is supposed to be also a valuable activity because the quality of translation will play important roles in attracting reader’s interest and appreciation.
In this chance I would like to analyze the quality of the translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets of Chapter 1. After reading the chapter both in English and Indonesian, I know the quality of the translation is good enough. I rare find some missing words in the translation I have read. In addition, I feel easy to understand the translation. Although there are several changes from the original version to the translation, the changes are not too significant. It still maintains the elements, which are important in the novel such as the intrinsic elements.
I would like to discuss some aspects that I consider important to be analyzed, they are:
Method, there are some methods in translating text. And the experts have different opinion about classifying the method. One of them is Newmark that uses eight terminologies in his classification. They are word-to-word, literal, faithful, semantic, communicative, idiomatic, free, and adaptation. I think that the translator uses communicative method because she or he convey the original contextual meaning in a way that communicative and really can be accepted by the readers.
Content and meaning, I think that the translator can maintain the original content and meaning. She or he is able to make the readers, especially me, read the translation like the original. In addition, the whole original meaning, which is suitable with the context, can be expressed appropriately. For example, The descriptions about the setting and the characters such as the description of Harry Potter, the Dursleys and Hogward are clear enough and almost no differences both in English and Indonesia.
The style of language, I think that the translator can use the natural language in translating the texts. It makes me interested in reading the translation like reading the original. For example, in the sentence “A joint of roast pork was sizzling in the oven” that is translated into ”daging asap sedang berdedesis di dalam oven”. So, The translator uses attractive language style.
Diction, I think that the translator can make good decision in choosing the words. For example, the word “logue” according to John M. Echolis and Hassan Shadily’s dictionary it means “kamar duduk” but it is translated into “ruang tamu”. It is more appropriate than the previous one. But, I do not agree with the translation of the word “howled” that is translated into “raung”. I think it should be “teriak” because “raung” tends to be the sound that is produced by animals and things. Furthermore, the word “gentleman” is still in English.
Grammatical pattern, it is important to realize that every language may follow the different grammatical rules. In addition, it is obvious that grammatical rules between English and Indonesia are different such as the arrangement of words, singular and plural, etc. I think the translator master in both languages because she or he can arrange the translation in good order and translate the sentences in certain tenses appropriately. For example, in the sentence “I’ll be waiting to open the door”. If the translator translates it originally the translation should be “saya akan sedang menunggu untuk membuka pintu. But, it is translated into “aku siap membuka pintu”.
Culture, this novel translation deals with all aspects exist in both source and target language including culture. It is obvious that there are differences between English and Indonesian culture. The translator can know where appropriate, an assessment of the likely place of the translation in the target language culture. For example, about the magic words in the chapter that is please is only in English culture.
Finally, I conclude that the quality of Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets translation on the chapter one which is subtitled “The Worst Birthday” is great enough. It makes the readers enjoy and interested in reading the translation.

An Analysis of Translation Quality of Harry Potter and
the Chamber of Secrets: Chapter One
Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets is the second series of the whole seven series of the novel that stories about the adventure of Harry Potter in the magic world. This series is the masterpiece of J. K. Rowling, a great novelist from Scotland with a huge talent and imagination in creating attractive, great and fascinating stories. The chamber of secrets stories about the adventure of Harry potter in breaking the mystery of a mysterious hidden chamber that spread the terror in Hogwarts after it is opened.
The novel itself had also translated in Indonesia because of the popularity of the novel so that plenty of Indonesians wish for read it. Listiana Srisanti, the translator, had done her job quite well in transforming the whole story from English into Bahasa Indonesia. And now allow me to make an effort in analyzing the translation quality of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Chapter One.
Overall the method of the translator in transferring the meaning of the novel is good enough in representing the overall imagination of the author that want to share to the readers. As a ‘Bridge of Meaning’ the translator might has understand the entire components of the novel from the technical components, which is the problems of equivalence, until the source culture of the novel used in the story, British culture.
I’m able to perceive the method of translating she used is word to word translation. However, the result of the translation is satisfaction enough. The translator can simply represent the situation wanted to catch by the readers from the author. But here, sometimes this technique doesn’t work well. The chemistry and the beauty of the sentence is almost gone because of the words used by the translator are not very attractive. For instance in the sentence “He’d almost be glad of a sight of his arch-enemy, Draco Malfoy, just to be sure it hadn’t all been a dream…” The sentence is translated “Dia bahkan akan senang kalau bias melihat musuh besarnya, Draco Malfoy, sekadar meyakinkan bahwa bukan hanya mimpi…” We are not able to catch the difference of mood if we haven’t read the original one and then compare it with the target language version.
In the original novel, every sentence, phrase, and even a word has a very unique character and purpose that spread the aim of the author to represent each situation, character, special moment, and even trivial things to be caught by the readers. The description of something has a very powerful outcome to the readers so that we can explore our imagination toward the story. In the Indonesian version, the chemistry of the story is represented in a not really attractive way. For example “Countless times, Harry had been on the point of unlocking the Hedwig’s cage by magic and sending her to Ron and Hermione with a letter, but it wasn’t worth the risk.” that is translated “Sudah puluhan kali, Harry hampir membuka kandang Hedwig dengan sihir dan mengirimnya kepada Ron and Hermione dengan membawa surat, tetapi terlalu besar resikonya.” That sentence is an evidence for how poor the vocabulary used by the translator in representing the sentence. As a result, we can frequently found the paragraph which is truly clear and is able to carry on the plot of the story very well, but in the aspect of beauty and the sense of the story, it is not delivered well. It can be seen by how easy we read the novel, but occasionally we are not really enthusiasm or even feel bored then we feel sleepy in enjoying this wonderful novel. The diction used by the translator should be full of chemistry and attractive sense to build the curiosity and the interest of the reader in taking pleasure of the novel.
However, I assume that the translator has done her job well. She was capable of delivering the major message the author want to share to the reader in Bahasa Indonesia. Almost the overall message has been converted well so that the readers would not get lost in reading the story since the plot is well organized. She was also capable of creating the meaning that is considered easy to understand. She was also able to adjust the effective and ineffective words used in the source novel by omit it or maybe add some words to construct understandable story for us. So I would like to say thank you to the translator, Listiana Srisanti for her well-done job.

The Analyzing of Chapter 1 of Harry Potter and Chamber of Secret According to the Three Keys Characteristics of a Good Translation
Translation communicates the same message in another language. A good translation has to possess these three keys:
Accuracy
Logic
Clarity
Knowing whether the translation is good or not, comparing both the source text and target text at the same time. In this essay, I am going to analyze the translation of the text of the chapter 1 of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” based on the three keys of characteristics of a good translation, to know whether it is good or not.
First of all, I will analyze the accuracy of this translation. I noticed that there is a word that is changed. For example, in the source text, “..., an argument had broken out over ‘breakfast’...”. But the translation is “.....pertengkaran meledak ‘di meja makan’...”. It is not accurate because there is no noun phrases that indicates ‘meja makan’. There is only a word ‘breakfast’ there. It should be “bukan untuk pertama kalinya pertengkaran meledak selama sarapan rumah Private Drive nomor empat”. Furthermore, the word ‘raungnya’ in “Untuk ... minggu ini!” raungnya is not proper since in bahasa Indonesia ‘raung’ is used to express illness, misery, in this case, Mr. Vernon was upset. It should be ‘bentaknya or hardiknya’. Another example is the word ‘seserpih’ and ‘bergantungan’ in “seserpih telur goreng bergantungan pada kumisnya yang lebat” is not common in our culture. It is better to use the word ‘sisa’ and ‘menempel’. Before that I found the noun phrase ‘bunyi uhu-uhu keras’ in “.... oleh bunyi uhu-uhu keras...,Harry” is not accurate because the real translation of a loud, hooting noise is bunyi yang bising, suara teriakan. However, I really understand why Listiana Srisanti, the translator of this book, used ‘bunyi uhu-uhu’. She wanted to give the sound of owl lively. In the next page, I noticed that there is an additional sentence to make it clearer to the readers. In fact, a good translation should not be added or omitted. For instance, Dudley adalah anak Mr. dan Mrs. Dudley is the additional sentence from ‘.... by a long, loud belch from the Dursleys’ son, Dudley.’ The word ‘kata’ in “Maksudku kata ‘tolong’!” kata Harry cepat-cepat should be changed into ‘ralat’ since it wil gives closer meaning that Harry wanted to switch his words. Inasmuchas there are ‘the post’ and ‘owl’, the noun phrases ‘surat-surat’ and ‘burung-burung’ in “,surat-surat yang dibawa oleh burung-burung hantu,” are not appropriate grammatically. Next, there is a word that wasn’t translated, that is, ‘his four-poster bed,’ it should be translated ‘ranjang berkaki empatnya.’ For the second time, ‘raung’ should be translated ‘gertak’. In my opinion, ‘spellbook’ should be translated into ‘buku mantra’. Next, ‘tampilan’, it heard strange. Although, I understand that it means Harry’s physical appearance. Then, in the sentence “...di sekolah sihir. Di situ...”, it should be comma after ‘sihir’ and followed by ‘dimana’. I found ‘lounge’ has different meaning in the different sentence, ‘kamar tamu’, and ‘ruang tamu’. It means ‘ruang duduk’ lexically. So, it is inconsistent. I also noticed, there is mistyping as ‘kaubawa’, it should be separated.
Secondly,I found some of them are illogical. First, ‘sebelumnya’ in “sebelumnya Mr. Vernon telah terbangun....”, in my opinion, should be omitted, because ‘sebelumnya’ and ‘telah’ have the same meaning that is previous. Then, ‘beterbangan’ in “... beterbangan di luar” is illogical because ‘beterbangan’, I think, means something happens unintendedly given something. In fact, owl (bird) flies automatically. It should be “terbang berkeliling.” Next, the phrases ‘matanya terharu’ really doesn’t make sense for ‘terharu’ relates to feeling, not eye. I think that Ms. Srisanti wanted to show Aunt Petunia’s eyes is’berkaca-kaca’. Then, ‘pantatnya melimpah di kiri-kanan kursi’ is hyperbole. Literature works should use figurative language, but it must be used precisedly. It should be ‘pantatnya memenuhi sisi-sisi kursi’. After that, ‘AKU TAK MENGIZINKAN KEABNORMALANMU DISEBUT-SEBUT DI BAWAH ATAP RUMAH INI”, as a reader, the first question ran over my mind is how many abnormality Harry Potter has? It will be better if the sentence, AKU TIDAK MENTOLERIR SEBUTAN DARI KETIDAKNORMALANMU DI BAWAH ATAP RUMAH INI. Furthermore, ‘tanpa leher’ is very illogical, Unce Vernon looked like a ghost if he is neckless, it should be ‘hingga lehernya tak terlihat’ to emphasize that he is very fat. Another example is ‘kesannya seperti babi’, it doesn’t make sense if the statement before is ‘kulitnya merah jambu’. Dudley’s skin colour should be grey,then. It should be ‘dan menyerupai seperti daging babi segar.’
Last is about clarity. ‘Harry mecoba, sekali lagi, untuk menjelaskan’ is less expressiveness. It didn’t emphasize that Harry has his heart set on explaining’. It can be ‘Harry masih terus mencoba, sekali lagi, untuk menjelaskan’. Next, ‘sapu top’ is not clear for me,too. It should be ‘sapu terbang terbaik saat itu’. Then, ‘membeli rumah berlibur’ is ambigous. It can be interpreted in 2 ways, 1. Dursleys will buy a house then go to Majorca for vacation. 2. Buy a house for spending holiday in Majorca.
In the end, after reading and analyzing both text (source and target), I conclude that this translation is not good enough.

THE ESSAY ANALYSIS OF
HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRET
A Harry Potter book series is written by J.K Rowling. There many series of this book. It is such a wonderful fact that all the series of this book are always sold out with the great number of copy. The distribution of this book is involved almost around the word. In some countries, there is translation edition for this book, include in Indonesia. One of the books is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret. I will explain my analysis of its chapter one about The Worst Birthday in Harry potter and the Chamber of Secret. The quality of the translation of chapter one is not good. There are some aspects that influence it. These aspects are:
First, a good translation should be able to convey the feeling from the original one; so that the reader can feel the same feeling if he read both the original and the translation. But, in this translation, I feel different, sometimes I feel funny with the translation. The example is Mr. Vernon Dursley had been woken in the early hours of the morning by loud, hooting noise from his nephew Harry’s room. (page 7, line 2). The translation is Sebelumnya, Mr. Vernon Dursley telah terbangun pagi-pagi buta oleh bunyi uhu-uhu keras dari kamar keponakannya, Hary. (page 7, line3). But I think it should be Mr. Vernon Dursley telah terbangun di pagi buta karena suara yang sangat berisik dari kamar Harry, keponakannya.
Second, a good translation should be able to build an acceptable sentence in the native language and convey the messages from the original one. On the other hand, some translation of this is translates based on the dictionary so that incomprehensible. Then, this translation sometimes makes me confuse to understand because of unacceptable words. The example is Harry stared from his purple-faced uncle to his pale aunt, who was trying to heave Dudley to his feet. (page 8, line 13). Its translation is Harry bergantian memandang wajah keunguan pamannya dan wajah pucat bibinya, yang sedang berusaha membantu Dudley bangun. (page 9, line 7). I thing it should be Harry bergantian menatap wajah pucat pasi pamannya sampai bibinya yang pucat, yang sedang berusaha mengangkat Dudley ke kakinya. Next another example is Uncle Vernon was large and neckless, with an enormous black moustache; Aunt Petunia was horse-faced and bony;. . . (page 9, line 8). The translation is Paman Vernon gemuk dan tanpa leher, denngan kumis hitam besar. (page 10, line 24); Bibi Petunia kurus berwajah kuda. I think it should be Paman Vernon gemuk dan berleher pendek, dengan sebuak kumis hitam yang sangat besar; Bibi Petunia berwajah runcing seperti kuda dan sangat kurus. In addition, . . . , offering his fat arm to an invisible woman. (page 10, line 31). Its translation is. . . , menawarkan lengannya yang gemuk pada wanita yang tak kelihatan. (page 13, line 15). It should be . . . , menawarkan lengan besarnya kepada wanita yang ada dalam imajinasinya.
Fourth, a good translation should be able to match the context of the original. In contrast, this translation doesn’t. To make it clear, the example is We’ll be shopping for a holiday home in Majorca this time tomorrow. (page 11, line14). The translation is Kita akan membeli rumah berlbur di Majorca pada jam sekian besok malam. (page 14, line 18). It should be Kita akan berbelanja untuk menginap di Majorca besok pada jam yang sama. Then, . . . ; he knew it was only their terror that he might turn them all into dung beetles that stopped them locking him in the cupboard under the stairs with his wand and broomstick. (page 11, line 38). Its translation is Dan Harry tahu, rasa takut itulah yang mencegah mereka mengunci dirinya di dalam lemari di bawah tangga, bersama tongkat dan sapunya. (page 15, line 21). It should be Dia tahu ini hanya ancaman mereka yang mungkin saja dia dapat membawa mereka kedalam kotoran kumbang yang menghentikan mereka menguncinya didalam lemari dibawah tangga bersama tongkat dan sapu sihirnya.
Fifth, a good translation should be carefully with the punctuation in the original one. But, in this translation, it doesn’t work. Sometimes there are sentences that should be have comas punctuation in the original, but in the translation be stop punctuation. For example, Harry tried to argue back but his words were drowned by a long, loud belch from the Dursleys’ son, Dudley. (page 7, line 14). The translation is Harry mencoba berargumentasi, tetapi kata-katanya tenggelam oleh sendawa Dudley yang keras dan panjang. Dudley adalah anak Mr dan Mrs Dursley. (page 8, line 1). It should be one sentence, so that we don’t need stop punctuation in the translation.
So, we should consider many aspects if we want to translate any literature or book or anything into our native language.

It is not very surprised if we like the book of Harry Potter better than the movie, isn’t it? The book gives unlimited room for readers to create imaginations by themselves. J.K Rowling has success to create an imaginary the world of witch and wizard become so real and fantastic. The readers are invited to take experience of magic adventure.
The book makes controversial. This because its translation in Indonesian. Maybe mostly people like the original book of English version by J. K Rowling. They think that translation in Indonesian lost of fantasy image. The author tries to invite the reader into world of witch and wizard by reading book like read a belles letters, but when they read in Indonesian language they are like reading bedtime story. They think that this is very grievous.
But, there are some words created by Indonesian translator. In “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”, Indonesian translator makes new world in Indonesian. We can see on the first chapter in first paragraph, “hooting noise” translated in Indonesia become “bunyi uhu-uhu”. It makes unique word. The translator depicts figure behaviors very look like with its original masterpiece. But, of course this is adapted for Indonesian. So, the readers fell good and not weird. It can be seen in all paragraphs. For example: “The effect of this simple sentence on the rest of the family was incredible. Dudley gasped and fell off his chair with a crash that shook the whole kitchen: Mrs Dursley gave a small scream and clapped her hands to her mouth; Mr Dudley jumped to his feet, vein throbbing in his temples. The translation in Indonesian: “Dampak kalimat sederhana pada keluarga itu sungguh luar biasa. Dudley tersedak dan terjatuh dari kursinya keras sekali sampai menggetarkan seluruh dapur. Mrs Dursley menjerit dan menutup mulutnya. Mr Dursley melompat bangun, urat-urat berdenyutan di pelipisnya.
The translator translates this masterpiece honestly. From the internet, we know that the translator who translates the book of Harry Potter named Listiana Srisanti. She translates every single word as the same as the original masterpiece. It is good on translating of word and also its writing. We can see on this chapter when Mr Dursley is being angry with Harry Potter: “WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU, ‘ABOUT SAYING THE M WORD IN OUR HOUSE?’ or ‘HOW DARE YOU THREATEN DUDLEY!’. In Indonesian we can see: ‘BUKANKAH SUDAH KULARANG, ‘MENGUCAPKAN KATA ‘S’ ITU DALAM RUMAH KITA?’ or ‘BERANI-BERANINYA KAU MENGANCAM DUDLEY!’. She also write the filler word as the same as the original masterpiece, ‘MUUUUUUM!’ howled Dudley, tripping over his feet as he dashed back towards the house. Indonesian version: “MUUUUUUM!” raung Dudley, yang tersandung kakinya sendiri dalam ketergesaannya berlari kembali ke rumah. This seen that in Indonesian, they use “……”, but in English version ‘…….’ That is so different.
How about the magic words? What will be like witch and wizard world without magic words? I think it is very vacuous. There is no magic touch. So, there is no translation for magic words. For example: ‘Jiggery pokery!’ said Harry in a fierce voice. In Indonesian become: “Jiggery pokery” kata Harry tegas. Not left behind also, how about the history place. In Harry Potter’s store, there are some places if it changes to Indonesian language becomes weird. So, there is no change. Like Privet Drive.
Some of the English version words are still defended. This is related to term like Muggles (term for person who is not drop of magical blood in their veins). If the term changes into Indonesian, it will be weird or lost in translation. The story becomes not as the same as the masterpiece.
However, book of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Indonesian language still attracts Harry Potter’s lovers. Although it has several mistakes or some weird words, they always wait for the next book of Harry Potter in Indonesian version language too.
The weird words or some mistakes in translation don’t disturb them to enjoy the adventure of witch and wizard world. Book of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets chapter 1 in Indonesian has good translation.

THE ANALYSIS OF THE TRANSLATION’S QUALITY OF
“HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRTES” CHAPTER ONE
As we know, Harry Potter is one of the most famous fiction characters all around the world. Almost everyone, from kids until adults, loves him so much. Not only the books but also the movies of Harry Potter series always sold out. We should give a big honor to Joanne Kathleen Rowling or J. K. Rowling, the great author who created the phenomenon books of Harry Potter. One of those phenomenon book is “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” the second book of Harry Potter series. Thousands people in this world have read it, and it have translated into many languages include Indonesian.
In this very special occasion, I will analyze the quality of the translation of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” chapter one, The Worst Birthday. Moreover, I will focus in two factors, the way that the translator uses to describe and explain the story and the nature of the language.
First, I will discuss about the way the translator use in describing and explaining the story. I have read both the English version or the original one and the Indonesian version or the translation, and find the differences between them. When I read the original one, I can easily build an imagination related to the story because the author describes and explain the story very clearly. She can build up the reader’s imagination so well and makes them easily understand what she wants to tell. The situation, the characters and the feelings seems so real. Just like if we are there in that story. For example when she describes how Uncle Vernon watching Harry so angrily, “Uncle Vernon sat back down, breathing like a winded rhinoceros and watching Harry closely out of the corners of his small, sharp eyes,” I can feel as if I was there and see him look at Harry angrily. Every single word she uses was chosen carefully so that it can make the reader’s feel that they are see and listen everything in that story by themselves. Nevertheless, when I read the translation I find that the translator tries to do the same thing with the author. However, the translation cannot describe and explain the story as well as the author. She is good in convey the meaning, but she cannot convey the feelings of the story as well. The translation can be easily understood by the readers, but it cannot build up our imagination as well as the author did. Translation is not only how we can convey the meaning of a story in one language into another language but also how we can take the readers into the story as well as in the native language.
Second, I want to talk about the nature of the language. Here, I can see that the translator tries to make the translation as good as the original, in the diction, figure of speech and other aspects. Nevertheless, sometimes it sounds awkward. For example when she translate, “..., a bit of fried egg dangling from his bushy moustache,” into “…, seserpih telur goreng bergantung pada kumisnya yang lebat,” it sounds awkward for Indonesian people because it does not match with Indonesian grammar. The sentence is correct, but it does not ‘communicativeable.’ However, the translator had done a good job in others aspects. Her decision to skip or add some words in order to make Indonesian readers understand and enjoy the story is a good choice. We know that sometimes there are many words in English that cannot be translated into Indonesian easily so that we have to skip or add some words to make it acceptable in Indonesian language. So agree with the translator in this case.
In short, after read both the two version of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” chapter one, The Worst Birthday, I can say that the quality of the translation of that phenomenon book is quite good and acceptable. Although there are some lacknesses found, I think the translation is acceptable for the Indonesian readers. The main goal of translation that is to convey the meaning of the story from one language into another language to the readers has reached well.

The Harry Potter book is already famous. It is written by Joanne Kathleen Rowling. Not only in Europe, but also in Indonesia many people recognize it. The story of Harry Potter is about magic, for that reason maybe a lot of people interest. Magic, in my opinion that word has meaning a wonderful mystic, and other can describe this word with their own interpret. A Harry Potter himself is a young boy mastering magic. He is able to use many kinds of magic skill. No wonder the story inside this book is very interesting to be followed by everyone. Hogwarts, that’s name of school for young magicians. It is a beautiful place and the elements within. And this is also interesting, magic skill, dreamland, self imagination, and then magic battle is also appeared in this book. In short, the story inside is very attractive.
The Harry Potter book is going to be most wanted. Including Indonesian, they look for it. Certainly, some of Harry Potter lovers want translation book of Harry Potter, because sometimes people do not have ability in understanding English Language. For example in Indonesia they want it in bahasa. But, on the odd occasion the content from original book is not same as the original one. Once in a while there are miss interpretations from translator who translate the book to the second language. This can cause problem to the reader, because the message from the original writer is not delivered to them. For that reason, I will try to analyze Indonesian version of the book of Harry Potter.
Almost all the content in the chapter one of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets” Indonesia version is easy for the beginner reader to understand. That’s really need skill and thoughtful to translate this book. Whether there is good and lack within, it depends on the reader it self. The reason is the book is published to widespread, and I think acceptable. For me, the translation is friendly. I mean that easy to identify with.
Let’s look to this utterance, “Mr Vermon Dursley telah terbangun pagi-pagi buta oleh bunyi uhu-uhu”, from the Indonesian book of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets” I can make inference that the translator is clever enough to match the suitable word between English and Indonesia. From the English version “Mr Vermon Dursley had been woken in the morning by a loud, hooting noise”. The word “uhu-uhu”, the translator chooses the good choice, because it directs to the sound of owl bird. That seems familiar and interesting to be heard.
Not all the content from this book is translated to the Indonesian, there is some parts that the writer didn’t do that. For example “He crossed the lawn, slumped down on the garden bench and sang under his breath, ’Happy birthday to me … happy birthday to me …’”. In bahasa the writer did not translate into “Dia menyebrangi halaman, mengenyakkan diri di bangku kebun dan bernyanyi pelan.”Selamat ulang tahun untuk ku… selamat ulang tahun untuk ku…” because the clause ’Happy birthday to me … happy birthday to me …’” that’s original song from happy birthday to you, then Harry Potter changes it into happy birth day to me. Next is “Jiggery pokery! And Hocus pocus …. Squiggly wiggly…” the writer also didn’t translate that part because that’s name of magic spell. It can cause miss understanding if that words are translated to Indonesian, although there is no suitable words for it in Indonesia.
There is no perfect in this world, include language it self sometimes they cannot be translated into suitable word in target language. This is because the element of language between first language and target language is different. Let’s check this “You have forgotten the magic word”, from that utterance in the chapter one of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets”, there are many interpretations. Not only about the meaning, but also sometimes it causes confuse to Indonesian reader, because in Indonesia there is no utterance magic word. So it is difficult for the translator to translate with suitable word.
Finally, after reading both English and Indonesian version of the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret, I can make end that Indonesian version is almost perfect.

Harry potter and the chamber of secrets is the second series of its wonderfull seven serials . Both of its serials have been the books which are most read by million people around the world. Of course, it has been translated into so many kind of languages so people who even do not know English can also read this book. In this essay, I want to analyze the quality of indonesian translation of chapter one of ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ which is translated by Listiana Srisanti.
First time I read both of the english and indonesian edition of ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ I feel that istiana Srisani tried to addapt its original English into Indonesian culture of language in order to be more understood by indonesian readers. She did it by giving addition words, skipping some words, and also finding new meaning in Indonesian language which is “actually” diferent from its original meaning. Although “I think” there are still some shortages in translating the words such as unsent message, some ambiguity meanings and some words that would be smoother if she chose the any other words, she did an excellent work because she made it easy to understand by making some unique description to send messages.
The translator tried to make additional words in order to make a good description for Indonesian readers which actually do not exist in the original one. In a sentence “Dudley was blond, pink and porky” Listiana Srisanti chose to translate it “Dudley berambut pirang, kulitnya agak merah jambu, jadi kesanya seperti babi.” Here the translator gave additional words “jadi kesannya seperti babi” which do not actually exist in the English version. But it is utterly fine because the translator wanted to make a good description to describe Dudley so it could be easy to understand. The word “porky” would be weird for Indonesian readers if Listiana Srisanti translated it into its original meaning “kebabian” because there is no words “kebabian “ in Indonesian language.
Some skipping words also appeared while I was reading both of English and Indonesian versions. For example in the sentence “…most witches and wizards still feared to speak” the translator just translated it into “banyak penyihir.” In indonesian language witch means “tukang sihir wanita” while wizard means “ahli sihir”. But Listiana Srisanti did not choose to translate it into “banyak penyihir wanita dan ahli-ahli sihir” because it would be awkward if she translated like that. The other same reason also appeared when she translated “Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardly” into “sekolah sihir Hogwarts”. Another skipping word when the translator describes the lord voldemort “…, his wide, and mad eyes…”. The word “his wide” in the Indonesian version is skipped because the meaning of “…his wide, and mad eyes” are enough to be just translated “matanya yang liar”. Then I find that ““sleeping in his four-poster bed in the tower dormitory” just translated into “tidur di tempat tidurnya di menara asrama”. She did not translate the words “four-poster” because it would be a confusing meaning for Indonesian readers. So, her decision to make skip those words is totally right and smart.
The most excellent work that Listiana Srisanti did is she tried to adapt the translation into Indonesian language culture by finding new meaning in Indonesian language which is “actually” diferent from its original meaning. In deed, it is with a purpose to make the translation easy to understand by Indonesian readers. In a sentence “…by a lomg, loud belch from the Dursleys’ son, Dudley” she translated into “..sendawa Dudley yang keras dan panjang. Dudley adalah anak Mr dan Mrs Dursley”. She could only translate that sentence with “sendawa keras dan panjang dari anak Dursley, Dudley”, but by translating into that form it does not sound good and awkward for Indonesian ears. And she made that sentence smoother and acceptable for Indonesian language by translating the genitive phrase “Dursleys’ son, Dudley” with adding new word “Dudley adalah anak Dursley”. Another example when I read a sentence “wish they could see famous Harry Potter now”. She translated it into “sayang sekali mereka tidak bisa melihat Harry Potter sekarang”. For me myself maybe could not find the best meaning for the word “wish” but the genius translator made her decision into that form which not only clear the meaning but also acceptable for Indonesian language.
The laxity of her translation comes from several unsent message, ambiguity meanings and some words that would be smoother if she chose the any other words. The translation “uhu-uhu” in Indonesian language is rarely used, and then the words “magic” in “you’ve forgotten the magic world” which is translated “kata sihir” sounds strange for Indonesian language. In English it is kind of expression which is used for ask a favor like please or help me. There is no magic word in Indonesian language; maybe she considered the next sentences that the world “magic” is a forbidden word in the dursleys’ house, so she used “kata sihir” for “magic word”.
Finally, I conclude that Listiana Srisanti did the translation very well. She could eliminate several matters because of the different culture of English and Indonesian language by her own in the excellent and smart way so Indonesian readers could enjoy the novel and feel the content deeply.

Does it REALLY good translation???
HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRET really good movie I had ever seen. This movie based on novel with the same title “HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRET”. This is very good novel. When I read the original version of this novel, I can imagine as if I was in that situation just like Harry Potter. I can feel Harry Potter’s sadness when his uncle mad to him and none of his friends in Hogwarts send him letter, Harry Potter’s anger when Dudley jeered him, and his greatest fear when he met lord Voldemort the greatest dark wizards.
Joanne Kathleen Rowling is very talented writer; she can bring us to imaginary world through her novel. But when I read the Indonesian version of HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRET I can’t found that feel, like when I read the original version of HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRET. I feel a different feeling. I just feel like reading an essay. Because I think that the translator translate it in o good way, but she forgot the very important thing, which is she translate an arts works, so she should be use art slangs too.
Besides that, I found that some words are not translated into Indonesian language. I don’t know why, but I think they should be translated into Indonesian language, so we as Indonesian reader easier to understand the story in this novel. For example: Mr. Vernon Dursley, the translator just write the same Mr. Vernon Dursley, I suggest it should be translated into “ Tuan Vernon Dursley”; the word “mumm” (mother), it should be translate into “mama” that’s more familiar for Indonesian peoples like me.
Moreover, I think the translator translate in that way because she wants to delivered the meaning or the novel and gives the story in this novel to the reader’s imagination, so the reader know the meaning exactly, so they would imagine what happen in the story based on what they have read from the novel. The translator just uses simple and daily Indonesian vocabularies in order to make the reader easier in understanding the story in HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRET. In fact, many peoples who have read it never complain about the translation of HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRET. But, I think just me and my friends as the students of English department who was taught translation can feel the strange of this translation. Moreover we can suggest and analyze this translation, so in the future there would be a better translation. I can suggest for being a better translation, there are some words that should be translate into a little different but still have the same meaning but more familiar in our ears. For example some words should be translated in a different way, such as;
An argument, it would better if we translate into “perdebatan” rather than “pertengkaran” because “pertengkaran” is sound like a physical violence.
Roared, it would better if we translate into “teriakan” rather than “raungan”, it sound stange in our ears, since we never use that word for human being.
Your abnormality, it’d better to translate into “keanehan mu” rather than “keabnormalanmu” because we usually use “keabnormalanmu” for physical handy cab.
Countless times, it would better to translate into “sudah berkali-kali” rather than “sudah puluhan kali”.
In contrary, I can conclude that in general I think it is a good translation since it was one of best seller books when it was release to the market. Many people wait for long time to get this book. And, nobody complain about the translation, they enjoy reading it very much. Moreover, they would read it many times till the next volumes come, so they familiar with the story and they can tell the story to the other friends. And when the next book released, they want to get it as soon as possible since they were wait for it and love to read it very much, even one of my friends love it very much and he has all the volumes, from the first book until the latest one. I think that all I can write. Thank you very much.

An Analysis of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret”
Pointed of Its Generic Structure and Cultural Context
In writing my essay analyzing, I break up it into two parts. First is common analyzing about translation. Second is singular analyzing about the translation of the chapter 1 of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”.
In general, when we construct translation writing, we shouldn't only pay attention with its meaning transfer but also in dealing the connection of its sense. A good quality translation will make a reader who is unfamiliar with the source text easily understand it.
Translation process is a vital process. We have to keep the whole aspect inside of the product and make it valuable. This process isn't a process to change the every word of one language’s meaning into the second one, which we call “word by word translation”. If we do this technique, it’s crystal clear that our product will be in “messy” arrangement. It can't be understandable, hears a little strange, and every reader who has a good knowledge about both of those language will laugh you all the time.
Some variations might be happened depend on the purpose of a given translation and its type. It has a very close relation with sense of the genre of the text. The unique thing of translation is that it needs an intuition of the translator. Sometimes, in an exceptionally rare situation, the mood of the translator accidentally will be reflected in their works.
In my opinion, the ideal translation should be accurate, means that in producing translation we do our best as correct as possible in translating the meaning. Not to mention, it also should be natural. What I mean is we are using natural forms of the reader native language so that it appropriates with the reader’s culture, habitual, and the events which are happened around them. To say the least, our translation must be communicative enough. It might be understandable to the reader from any age and social background.
After we translated the text, it should be read over and over in order to find out whether there are several mistakes or not, appropriate in the reader language and her/his culture or not and having the same sense or not.
Now, let’s have a look on “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret”. This text is a kind of literature text. So that beside we translate the meaning; we should maintain the sense of literature inside. It is significant since the readers are supposed not to be lost the mood of the story.
The product of translating English here into Indonesian, seems not as smooth as in the original version. Some words are translated into a strange meaning. I mean here is both its exchange meaning of the words and its cultural context. I analyze the text based on its Indonesian generic structure, cultural context and Indonesian diction style. These are the words which I pointed:
1.From generic structure and cultural context
> The way in translating, an argument had broken out over breakfast at number four, Privet Drive, into “pertengkaran meledak di meja makan rumah Privet Drive nomor empat” isn't appropriate enough with Indonesian generic structure. If we translate into that sentence, it means the thing which has fourth number is Privet Drive not the house. It should be translated into “pertengkaran meledak di meja makan rumah nomor empat, Privet Drive.
> We may also prefer to translate, if you can’t control that owl, into “kalau kau masih tidak bisa mengontrol burung hantu itu” than to use “kalau kau tidak bisa mengontrol burung hantu itu”. The word “masih” will surely help to emphasize that it was happened for many times and Harry still failed again and again.
2.On the diction aspect
> I found some sentences do not make sense enough to be used. For instance, the way translator translates into “pantatnya melimpah di kiri-kanan kursi dapur” is doesn’t acceptable in Indonesian people’s ears.
> “Harry merasa sangat rindu pada Hogwarts sehingga rasanya dia sakit perut terus-menerus”. There is a repetition of the word “rasa”. It is better if it was translated into, “Harry sangat merindukan Hogwarts hingga ia merasakan sakit perut berkepanjangan”.
> The word “raung” as a result of translating roared, isn't appropriate with the context. “Raung” used to express a big voice to convey the sickness. We may translate it into “bentak”.

“Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets” is the second title of J.K Rowling’s book about Harry Potter story. This book was translated into 46 languages, including in Indonesian language and to be the best seller of the year.
When I read the book for the first time, I read it in Indonesian language. I was very appreciating with it. Honesty, I read the edition in English for the first time, when Mr. Rohani gave this assignment.
After read it, I believe that the translator of this book must be expert of this. The translation of the book is easy to understand and we can get the feeling what the writer told in this book. Alright, I would like to give my argument about the translation of the book, especially for the chapter 1.
The first is the diction point of view. In my opinion the translator used an appropriate diction to make easy the reader imagine the situation of the story, but I found some of them have another meaning that it can be better if the translator use it. For examples: on the page 9 in English edition “...Harry had somehow survived a curse from...”, and in Indonesian “Harry, entah bagaimana berhasil selamat dari serangan dari...” I think that “curse” can be better if it means “kutukan” not “serangan”. And also in first paragraph on page 9 “..., with an enormous black moustache; ...” the translator wrote “...dengan kumis hitam besar...”, How if I use the word “lebat” to change “besar”. I think it will be better, right? I dont’t know whether the translator make a mistyping or not, because when I read it in other page. She translated “enormous” with word “lebat”. But I think it is a big project, why it can be happened. May be it will be fatal; because the readers need a good diction for help them, build their imagination.
Second, I found some incomplete translation sentences in this chapter. I will try to mention the examples. Give attention on page 7, paragraph 1 “..., an argument had broken out over breakfast at...”. May be, when we read the Indonesian version, we will not find the incomplete sentence. But if you compare with the English version, you will get it. The translator gave the meaning with sentence “...pertengkaran meledak di meja makan...”. She did not write the meaning of “over breakfast”. The other examples are found on page 8 “four-poster bed”, and on page 9 “bony”, “porky”, “most witches and wizards”. I think that it will be better if the translator give a complete meaning. Because when we compare it with the English version, we will be anxious with the complete translation to make us imagine the situation.
The third, I think that there are some ungrammatical sentences in Indonesian version. For example: “Harry Potter adalah penyihir-penyihir yang baru melewatkan...”, this sentence have an ambigous meaning. May be the translator can write “Harry Potter adalah seorang penyihir. Dia adalah penyihir yang baru melewatkan...”, it will make easy the reader to understand the meaning.
Besides mention the weakness point above, I also found so many appropriate meaning. The translator looks very brilliant for his translation of the sentence “...., his hopes hadn’t been high;” to “...harapannya tidak muluk-muluk”. And there are many other words like “where” to “disitu”, “something smelly” to “sampah bau”, etc.
When I read this chapter, I was trying to translate it. I felt confuse in page 8 “Harry stared from his purple-faced uncle to his pale aunt”, and from the Indonesian version, the translator wrote “Harry bergantian memandang wajah keunguan pamannya dan wajah pucat bibinya”. Those make me easy to get the point.
We have known that the Harry Potter story is need imagination. It tells a story about magic. Something that just a fiction, and can’t be happen in our reality. So every sentence has to be understanding if we don’t want to leave anything. From this principle, we need translator that can make us easy to follow the story from the first chapter until the last. And we got it. The translator can arrange word by word with a good compilation. A good diction and grammatical sentence is the most important things that can build a good imagination for the reader. So it make the story in Indonesian version is exact with the English perfectly.
Some corrections above are just my opinion; everyone can have other opinion to choose the best word to translate it. And this translation is easy to understand, with the result all of Indonesian people can enjoy to read it easier.

Analyze of the quality of the translation of “chapter 1 of Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets”
There are so many translation books that occur in our country, Indonesian. We can enjoy reading all of them. But if we want to compare a little with the original book, we will find something different between those two books. There are some missing words or loosing meaning in that translate book. Here, I would like to try to analyze the quality of a translation book “chapter one of Harry potter and the chamber of secrets’. This analysis is depending on my knowledge and my understanding.
According to me, the criterion of good translation are considered in some aspects. They are: meaning inside, effect that will occur to the reader after reading the book, and the language mastery of the translation book verse.
I’ll start my analysis from the first, meaning inside. Here, if we aware, we will find out that there are some loosing meaning in the Indonesian verse. But, it’s not so fatal. Because we still can enjoy the passage and understand the real meaning without deviate from the original book meaning. I’ll say that in the meaning side, it has reach about 80% from the original book. I brave to say like this because of some evidence. There are only a few sentences that don’t make sense or seems inappropriate. For example, in sentence “they, however, didn’t seem to be missing him at all”. The translate here is “ meskipun demikian, mereka rupanya sama sekali tidak merindukannya”. I think this translate is lack in make the reader penetrate the soul of the sentence. If I may, I’ll give my verse here, “meskipun demikian, nampaknya mereka tidak merindukannya sama sekali”. But, I think its okay, because it’s not change the meaning.
Beside that, there is a very appropriate translation in a sentence here. ” WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU”. That translate with, “BUKANKAH SUDAH KULARANG!!!”. If we translate it word by word, there will be strange sound. But, the translator creative enough in find out the appropriate words. We know that each translator has their own way in translate language, and I think when their creativity doesn’t change the meaning itself, it will be okay.
Second is about the effect that will occur to the reader after reading the book. I’ve told above that it’s not so fatal in loosing meaning. And, of course, when we see from this aspect, only a little that doesn’t make sense. When I read the original verse, I feel more involve to the story than reading the Indonesian verse. And the effect is obviously different. I can feel the beauty of the sentence construct and the meaning itself. It seems that I really feel the atmosphere in the story. But if I read the Indonesian verse, isn’t so feeling the soul of the story. For example, in sentence “ why’re you staring at the hedge?”. He translate “ kenapa kau terus memandang pagar?”. According to me, “staring’ here is more than “memandang” in Indonesia. May be, “memandang sambil membayangkan sesuatu yang harus dilakukan pada apa yang dipandangnya itu “. But, we still difficult to find out appropriate words in Indonesia.
Last, the language mastery of the translation book verse. Here, it depends on the language mastery of the translator. I’ve found that translator still feel difficult in finding appropriate words in Indonesian. For example, in sentence “there’s more in the frying pan sweetums”. Translator translates “sweetums” by manis. It’s not wrong, but sounds strange for me. In Indonesian if parents call their son with manis, not suitable with the culture. So, the culture here is considered too.
Other example, in sentence “ my perfect little gentleman!”. Gentleman here isn’t translated. Translator still uses the words, and I think he can’t find out other good word that makes suitable meaning. Once again, it relates with his mastery in Indonesian language, and with culture itself.
In phrase “countless times”, translator translates with “sudah puluhan kali”. I think “puluhan kali” here can’t represent “countless time”.
Words “MUUUUUM!!, no change. He remains using “MUUUUUM!!, in expressing a scream. In Indonesian, there’s no MUUUUUM! It’s better if he uses “IBUUU!”
Being a good translator isn’t easy, but it isn’t difficult too if we are ready to study and try hard. Not only once or twice but always try and try to be a good translator. Here, I’ve learnt much about translation. Translator in this book is quality enough for me, but he still difficult to find the appropriate words in Indonesian. And, he uses his own way to translate correctly without change the meaning inside.

ANALYSIS OF CHAPTER 1 OF HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS
“Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” is the second book of the seven series of the phenomenal book which written by a talented writer, J.K. Rowling. The series of Harry Potter were written in English. Since Harry Potter is published in more or less two hundreds countries with different languages and to facilitate the readers in understanding the meaning, it was translated into other languages including Indonesian. And this essay will emphasize in analyzing the quality of the translation of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”, the first chapter “The Worst Birthday” translated in Indonesian “Harry Potter dan Kamar Rahasia”-“Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk”.
The readers will find it easy to be understood because Listiana Srisanti, the translator made a great translation. Her work is acceptable for the readers. Instead of translating word by word; to make it as natural as possible the translator translated the text contextually or based on the context. It is stated that translation is conveying meaning from one language to another completely. In this case, diction is an important thing in translation.
Talking about diction, it can be separated from the use of equivalent words. In conveying meaning the use of equivalent words will make the text not only natural but also smoother. The use of equivalent words can be seen in following examples:
1. Breakfast instead of sarapan it was translated di meja makan
2. Witchcraft and wizardry instead of sihir dan sihir it was translated sihir
3. Cleaned his throat instead of membersihkan tenggorokan it was translated berdeham
4. Burst into tears instead of meledak dalam air mata it was translated menangis saking terharunya
5. And soon
From the examples above, not only equivalent words used, but there are addition words and some missing words in Indonesian. We can infer that the use of equivalent words rose because it will sound weird if the translator used dictionary meaning. Once again, translation is conveying meaning from one language to another completely.
To get expected meanings some words were omitted. For example in “he roared across the table” was translated “raungnya”. Here the words he, across, the table were not translated. Still, omitting words used. “Mrs. Dursley gave a small scream…” was translated “Mrs. Durleys menjerit”. The words gave and a small were not translated. On the other hand to make it clear there are some additions words elicited. “…Hogwarts had written to Harry…” if we translated word by word we’ll get “… telah menulis kepada Harry…” but instead of that Listiana translated “…Hogwarts menulis surat kepada Harry…” we can see that there is no word letter but there is a word “surat” in the translated text.
To raise the readers’ imagination the way of J.K. Rowling told the situation is detail. For instance, “Dudley, who was so large his bottom drooped over either side of the kitchen chair…” Another example, “Harry looked nothing like the rest of the family. Uncle Vernon was large and neckless, with an enormous black moustache; Aunt Petunia was horse-faced and bony; Dudley was blond, pink and porky. Harry, on the other hand, was small and skinny, with brilliant green eyes and jet black hair that was always untidy. He wore round glasses, and on his forehead was a thin, lighting-shaped scar.” The translator translated it well, so readers will easily to imagine Harry and the Durley’s appearance.
Another aspect that catches my concern is the culture. In translating the text the translator must consider the culture. But here, Listiana Srisanti did not adapt the culture of the English into Indonesian. She still defends the text without adjusting with Indonesian culture. Some words even sentences are not common for Indonesian. “You’ve forgotten the magic word,”…”I meant “please”!” were translated ”kau lupa kata sihirnya,” …”maksudku kata “tolong”!”. “The magic word” here refers to “please”. For Indonesian readers it is not common to call “magic word”. We know, “magic word” in English is the way of calling some words like “please, thank you, and sorry”.
Also, we have to focus on the context of the situation. Since it’s all about things called magic world the words which are used are relates to magic, we can see in translating a word “broomstick”(Harry Potter’s stuff), the translator automatically would not say “sapu” exactly it would be translated “sapu terbang”.
In addition, there is a word which was not translated. A word “gentleman” in “my perfect little gentleman!” was not translated. It would have been suitable if the translator had said “pria”.
Overall the content of the story is complete it means although there are some methods which were used the Indonesian version is the same with the original one. Finally, to get an expected meaning we have to consider some aspects.

Translation Analysis of Chapter 1
“HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS”
This book entitled “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”. I want to try to analyze the quality of the translation in chapter 1 “The Worst Birthday”. The writer of this book is JK. Rowling and the translator is Listiana Srisanti.
The chapter tells about Harry’s activities in his summer holiday. He live with his uncle (Mr. Vernon), his aunt (Mrs. Petunia), and his nephew (Dudley). One day, coincide with Harry’s birthday, Mr. Vernon’s family had unexpected visitor. So, everybody busy to it and they forget Harry’s birthday. It is Harry’s twelfth birthday, but he feel so sad because no cards, no presents for him and he would be spending the evening pretending not to exist.
Harry knows that all the family didn’t like him, because they know that Harry was a wizard. And the Dursleys were what wizards called Muggles (not a drop of magical blood in their veins) and as a far as they were concerned, having a wizards in the family was a matter of deepest shame. Harry was a famous wizard because he had a scar which he got when Lord Voldemort attack his parents until they died. But nobody understood why Voldemort’s power had been destroyed the instant he had failed to kill Harry. Harry missed Hogwards so much, hi missed the situation in there: the castle, his lesson, etc. he didn’t have a facilitate to communicate with his friends, Ron and Hermione because Mr. Dursley locked the cage of Harry’s owl. Harry feels so sad and when he decided to back to his bedroom, he found there was someone sitting on it.
That is the review from chapter 1, and now I want to try to analyze some of the sentences from chapter 1:
a. …..turning nisty eyes on her massive son. (Page 7 paragraph 9)
= matanya terharu menatap anak laki-lakinya yang super gemuk.
The word ’misty’ and ’massive’ means ”sedih/sayu” and ”raksasa”, but the translator used the words “terharu” and “supergemuk”. She used a good diction to make the words can understand easily.
b. …..breathing like a winded rhinoceros and watching Harry….
(Page 8 paragraph 9)
= …, tersengal seperti badak bercula satu yang kehabisan nafas. Dia memandang Harry…..
The original book used a conjunction “and” to relate one clause with the other clause, but in Indonesian book, the translator divided the long clause into two sentences.
c. ….. (Though perhaps not Snape, the Potion master) page 8 paragraph 12
= walaupun mungkin tidak merindukan Snape, guru pelajaran Ramuannya.
This sentence didn’t have a word ”missed” but the translator used word ” merindukan” to make this sentence clear and avoid the misunderstanding with the reader.
d. Dudley was blond, pink and porky. ( Page 9 paragraph 1)
= Dudley berambut pirang, kulitnya agak merah jambu, jadi kesannya seperti babi.
This sentence, the translator used the technique of translation not word by word but maybe free translation, because when the translator used word by word technique, the meaning of the sentence wasn’t good.
e. …..,believing the Dursley’s story that he had got his scar…. ( Page 9 paragraph 4)
= …..dan mempercayai cerita keluarga Dursley bahwa bekas lukanya…..
This sentence like the example b, the original book didn’t used a conjunction to relate one clause with the other clause, but in Indonesian book, the translator divided the long clause into two sentences.
I think that some examples of the analysis of translation that I found. So the translator didn’t used only one kind of method to translate, but she used more than one. For example: word by word translation, free translation, etc. But usually the translator translate a book adapt with the culture where he/she lives.

Harry Potter is a series of novels contains seven books written by J. K Rowling. From children, teenager and adults, most of them are interesting in reading and watching the book and the film of Harry Potter. The novel has been translated into 67 languages, including bahasa (translated by Listiana Srisanti). I think one of the reasons that makes the book becomes very popular in around the world is the quality of its translations.
Reading translated books isn’t like reading books in our native language because every language has its own character whether in structure, lexical, meaning, or culture. The way the author conveys the message is also different. In this essay I will try to analyze the quality of the translation of chapter 1 of “Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets”. I have read it either the original text or its translation in Indonesian. As a whole the translator has done a great job, because it is not easy to translate it and not everyone can do it better. She has to be rich of knowledge about English especially on vocabulary because in the original text there are many idioms used. For instance “jumped to his feet” is translated “melompat bangun”, “…he was not normal as it possible to be” translated to “…dia memang sama sekali bukan anak biasa,” “I never went hungry….” translated to “aku tak pernah kelaparan waktu aku di Smeltings,” “went back to his toast” translated to “kembali memakan roti panggangnya” instead of “kembali pada roti panggangnya,” “should aim to get in a few good compliment at dinner” becomes “berusaha memberikan beberapa pujian selama makan malam” etc. If the translator translates them word by word the meaning will be different.
On this translation almost the words are easy to understand. So, the reader can get the point what the author wants to share. When I read it in Indonesian version I could imagine the situation of the story such as how the Dursley threatened Harry, Harry’s feeling on his twelfth birthday and how he missed Hogwarts. Actually, not all of the English words or sentences are translated into Indonesian, because it is not necessary to translate them. We can see on the sentence “Happy Birthday” and the word “Gentleman”. However, the translator tries not to change the meaning of the original text.
Even though the language of the translation is understandable, there are three important things should be noticed. First, there are some inappropriate words. When I read it, I found several inappropriate words and they should be changed by other words. For example the word “beterbangan”, in Indonesian “beterbangan” is used to express plural forms but in this text this word explains the word Hedwig harry’s owl, and it is a singular noun. It should be like this, “Dia biasa terbang di luar”. Then word “berargumentsi” this word is usually used in such kind of debate or discussion. It will be better if she uses word “menentang”, “He missed Hogwarts so much it was like having a constant stomach ache” it should be translated to “dia sangat merindukan Hogwarts, rasanya seperti sakit perut terus menerus” instead of “dia sangat rindu pada Hogwarts sehingga rasanya dia sakit perut terus-menerus.” “Mengenyakkan diri di bangku kebun” it should be “duduk di bangku kebun”, the sentence “sehingga bahkan mempermainkan Dudley pun tidak menarik lagi” it sounds awkward when the word sehingga stands next to bahkan the translator should choose one of these words. Next, about ambiguous meaning on the phrase “kata sihir” to Indonesian people it will be confusing wondering what the relation between the word “kata sihir” and the word “tolong”. Third, it is about culture. When a mother talks to her children she will say “Ibu” or “Mama” to call herself in front of them instead of “aku”. The sentence “aku tak senang mendengar…” said by Mrs. Dursley to her son Dudley should be translated “Ibu tak senang mendengar….” It will sound smoothly.
Based on my explanation above, I conclude that the translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets chapter 1 in bahasa is good, although there are some inappropriate words, phrases, clauses or sentences and sometime the translation doesn’t make sense and far from the beauty of language. It is not a big problem since it is still acceptable for the reader. The translator has reached the objective of translating itself that is conveying the meaning from English into Indonesian completely.

Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret is the book 2 in the Harry Potter series, the fantasy novels by J. K. Rowling. It has become the most read of children's novel in the world. Therefore, it has been translated from English into other languages. It has also been translated into Indonesian Language by Listiana Srisanti, translator, editorial and also production manager of fiction at Gramedia Pustaka Utama, the owners of the book's Indonesian translation rights.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret or in Indonesian language is Harry Potter dan Kamar Rahasia contains 18 chapters. The chapter 1 is The Worst Birthday. In Indonesian language, it is translated Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk. Moreover, the quality of the translation of the chapter 1 of “Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets” in Indonesian Language will be discussed in this essay.
Translating a book and even a popular book is not an easy work. The translator must be a professional one because his or her translation work will be published massively. The result of his or her translation work must be a high quality translation. If it is not, the content of the book can not be transferred well. As the result, the readers will be very disappointed.
Reading the chapter 1, Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk, the readers know that Listiana Srisanti has proved her quality of translating book. She has translated Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret into Indonesian Language in a good translation result although there are many terms which are quite difficult to translate used by J.K. Rowling. Listiana said, "She has created a lot of new words and terms which are very interesting to read, but quite difficult to translate if we want to keep the terms as interesting as the original." (The Jakarta Post.com).
However, there are some weaknesses in Listiana’s translation result in the chapter 1. First, she uses diction which is not common in Indonesian daily language such as:
1. The Worst Birthday is translated Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk. In my opinion, it should be translated Ulang Tahun Terburuk;
2. …his bottom dropped over…is translated pantatnya melimpah. It had better be translated pantatnya melebihi;
3. Harry looked…. It is translated tampilan Harry. According to me, penampilan Harry is better;
4. Lounge has been translated kamar tamu. Kamar tamu seems like a bedroom for the guest. Actually, lounge refers to a living room;
5. ...a lump of cheese...will sound better if it is translated sepotong keju than seonggok keju.
Second, she has translated some English words into inappropriate Indonesian Language words that may change the meaning like:
1. …it was like having a constant stomach ache becomes rasanya dia sakit perut terus-miners. The meaning has not been changed if it is translated rasanya separate menderita sakit perut yang terus-menerus.
2. “WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU” become “BUKANKAH SUDAH KULARANG”. It should be “APA YANG SUDAH AKU KATAKAN”.
3. “What wouldn't he give now for a message from Hogwarts?” has been translated and changed into positive sentence, Dia rela memberikan apa pun untuk mendapatkan kabar dari Hogwarts. The sentence should be Apa yang tidak akan dia berikan demi sebuah kabar dari Hogwarts?
4. Not that his whole year at Hogwarts had been fun. It should be translated bukan berarti sepanjang tahunnya di Hogwarts menyenangkan. The subject is his whole year at Hogwarts/ sepanjang tahunnya di Hogwarts. It will have different meaning when translated “Bukan berarti dia senang terus sepanjang waktu di Hogwarts”. The subject is dia/ he. It is different, isn’t it?
Third, she diminishes some words in the chapter 1 to be not translated:
1. …thin, lightning-shaped scar is only translated bekas luka berbentuk sambaran kilat. The word “thin” is diminished;
2. …his four-poster bed…is only translated di tempat tidurnya;
3. …a joint of roast pork…is only translated daging panggang.
Forth, she does not really consider grammatical rule. It can be found in some sentences such as:
1. …wizard school, where he and his scar were famous.... the sub-clause where he and his scar were famous....refers to wizard school. However, it is written sekolah sihir. Di situ dia dan bekas lukanya terkenal…. It should not be divided by full stop because it is still in one sentence.
2. And walk on the newspaper! has been translated Dan berjalan di atas koran! It is an imperative sentence which is translated into Indonesian language should be the verb without any suffix. Consequently, berjalan should be jalan.
In conclusion, the quality of the translation of the chapter 1 of “Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets” in Indonesian language is good after considering that the content of the book can be transferred well.

Harry potter and the Chamber of Secret is the second novel in the Harry Potter series written by J.K Rowling. It has become the most popular children’s literature in history, with readers of all ages and in many countries all over the world. As such the books have been widely translated from the original English into other languages, including Indonesian. In Indonesia, that great masterpiece is translated by a brilliant translator that have been translated the first novel of the Harry Potter series, Listiana Srisanti.
In her second translation of Harry Potter novel, Listiana Srisanti translates the title “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret” into “Harry Potter dan Kamar Rahasia”. In this novel, especially in the first chapter of the book, “The Worst Birthday”, she translates the chapter into very good Indonesian. Every single sentences of the chapter are translated as originally as possible, so that it can be easily understood by the readers. She tried to tell to the readers what J.K Rowling described in the novel as natural as possible. Moreover, some original words, such as the name of persons, place, some spells, charms and many magical terms also translated into a great Indonesian language without changing its meaning. However, we still find some weaknesses in that translation if we read the Indonesian version in detail. These weaknesses seem to reduce the beauty of the meaning that the author, J.K Rowling, intended to share with the readers. We can analyze the weaknesses into the following:
Firstly, the diction chosen (in Indonesian) are sometimes, not as beautiful as the meaning J.K Rowling intends to share. Sometimes, Listiana Srisanti chooses some words that we rarely use in the everyday language, our Bahasa Indonesia, so that it is seems to be strange. For example:
• The word “melimpah” in describing Dudley’s bottom seems not appropriate, because we rarely or even don’t use “melimpah” in describing a bottom. I think the word “mencuat” would be much better.
• In describing Voldemort’s destroyed power, she uses the words “punah” that sounds strange. It would be better if it is substituted by “lenyap”.
• In the sentence “....he kept making odd things...” the phrase kept making is translated into “tak putus-putus”. I think it would be more beautiful, if the translator uses “tak henti-hentinya”.
• etc.
The use of these strange words should be avoided, since it will make the readers can’t understand what the writer intends to say.
Secondly, still in the way the translator chooses the dictions, it seems that there are some words that are translated less beautifully. Let’s see from the title itself, in this first chapter, the title seems to be less beautiful, “Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk”. What if the words “paling buruk” is substituted by “terburuk”? I think it will be much better.
Furthermore, there are some sentences too that are not translated as good as possible, such as the sentences in the first paragraph of page 12 (in the Indonesian version), ...apalagi kue ulang tahun -- tapi kalau sama sekali melupakannya... I still can’t understand the meaning of the last clause.
Also, in the last two pages of the translation, the translator seems to ignore the grammatical rule in Indonesian language, so that it makes the language seems less beautiful too. For examples, let’s see in the sentences when Aunt Petunia instructed Harry to come in:
“Get in here! And walk on the newspaper!” and the translation is:
“Masuk! Dan berjalan di atas koran!” If we analyze it in Indonesian language structure, it isn’t a good sentence. It is an instruction in direct speech, it may not use the prefix “ber”, because “ber” isn’t for an imperative sentence. To make it a good imperative form, the prefix “ber” has to be omitted, so the sentence becomes “Masuk! Dan jalan di atas koran!”. Maybe it is a simple thing, but it influence the beauty of the sentences too if it is ignored.
Finally, we can see that translation needs so many things to be concerned. The points the translator ignore such as dictions, target language structure, etc. that I mentioned above maybe are simple things, but it influences the whole translation and makes the translation seems to be less beautiful, or in Javanese, we call it “kurang luwes”. It is important for us to know that translating is not only a matter of substituting the words with other words from the target language, but it also needs our consideration about the target language’s context and culture. We have to make our translation as natural as the the original one as possible.

AN ANALYZING THE QUALITY OF THE TRANSLATION THE CHAPTER ONE OF THE NOVEL HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS.
Translation is not only change a word or words from one language to another language, but also transfers the meaning of it, without editing the plot or the character of the story or the text. But, it does not mean that translation only transfer the original one to the other language in every single word.
The result of translation of the text from one to another person is different. In translation of the text we have to use our heart to follow not only the meaning but also the plot. Considering the characters is also important to get the meaning of the result. Because of that, before having translation of the text it is very important to reading the whole of the text in order to get all the elements of the text or literature, such as the character, plot, moral value, crisis, climax, etc.
Basically, the result of translation of “THE WORST BITRHDAY” is good enough. It is easy to understand in all ages, not only for the children but also for adult. It is not difficult to get the meaning of every single word which is used in the text. The word is also familiar. Because in choosing the words, translator has chosen the simple words. He considered to the reader of the novel that is all ages.
The sensation in the novel which the author made was really amazing. It is very unbelievable. The sensation of the novel could be adopted by the translator in Indonesia language in very good pack without loosing the plot of the story. It is clearly shown by how the translators ask the reader to imagine what is happening in the story and how each the character do their part of the section of the dialogue and also how they expressed their idea in their own expression. In another hand, the feeling which would make in reading the Indonesian language and the English ones will be different. The problem of it is on the choosing of the words. In some cases, choosing words is very important. It is necessary to make the reader to have same idea and imagination with what the writer on the original text has made. Because of it, in choosing the words which is used we have to more carefully or it will be in problem in our result of the translation.
In some cases, in translating of some text we find the difficulty. In one language, there is no words which have meaning of the original language or may be we have to choose so many words is target language which appropriate with the word which is mention in the text and considering the meaning itself.
Here I have found some words from the text. I think the word I have found need to be replaced.
The first is the word of “pertengkaran” in the first paragraph. I think it is better if we chance with “adu argumen”. Pertengkaran tend to need some physic action. In addition, the actions which happen in pertengkaran are more complicated. There are at least of two character fight, may be in words or physically. In the case, on the text we only Mr. Vernon Dursley talk more than then Harry Potter. In addition, if we translate “pertengkaran” back to English, we will find quarrel from the Indonesia language of “pertengkaran”. Even so, we do not have “quarrel” in the original ones.
Second, the word “uhu-uhu” is also complicated. In the first time I read, I did not get the meaning of this word. May be in the mind of the translator in using uhu-uhu word is the sound that is made by the owl of Harry Potter. It is similar with the sound of owl but I think the reader will find the difficulty in getting the meaning of this word.
Third, in the sentences ‘Harry tried to argue back but his words were drowned by a long, loud belch from the Dursley’s son, Dudley’, the words ‘were drowned’ should be translated ‘ditenggelamkan’. In the original translation, it is translated ‘tenggelam’. Tenggelam in Indonesia language is an adjective. The function of ‘were drowned’ in English form is verb. So, in translate it into Indonesia language should be translated in ‘kata kerja’ or verb, too.
However, there are some mistakes, it is good enough. The translator can convey the meaning of the novel to Indonesia language and the reader will enjoy in reading this amazing novel.

Analysis of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Chapter One
and the Comparison with Indonesian Version
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second of the whole seven series of the novel that is written by Joanne Kathleen Rowling. She is a great and genius novelist from Scotland that her novels be the most wanted novel in the world for the last years. The seven series of Harry Potter tells about the adventure of Harry Potter in the magic world. Because of the popularity of the novel, so it had been translated in all over the world. This novel had been waited for thousands people when the book are going to released. And of course, In Indonesia it is translated by Listiana Srisanti.The traslator, I think had done quite well in transforming the story from English into Indonesian. In this case I will try to make analyzing the traslation quality of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Chapter One.
After I read both original and the translating novel, I think that “feel” that I got is very different. Yes, of course. Different language has different meaning. Sometimes one word in one language has more than one meaning or, even that word can not be translated because it is very special. That sometimes, this is the problem that have to be faced by all the translator. So the how the translator choose appropriate the word is very significant. In translating this novel, Listiana uses Indonesia language that familiar with all of ages. Because this novel be read by children, teenagers, and elders.
The methods that are used by author is different. She tried to convey the meaning the story to indonesian people. Without any exception, she tried to representing the culture, in this context is British culture, in order that culture can be understood by Indonesian people. For example,”There’s more in the frying pan, sweetums.” Said Aunt Petunia. It is translated “Masih banyak di wajan, manis,”jawab Bibi Petunia. Here, we can see that she did not translate words by words, she translated frying pan into “wajan.” That is, if it is translated words by words would be “panci penggorengan.”
The translator also tried to skip the words and did not translate it. For example,”…,an argument had broken out over bresfast at number four, Private Drive.” It is translated “…, pertengkaran meledak di meja makan rumah Privet Drive nomor empat.” She did not translate breakfast here. I think it is a good decision, because the sentence will sound awkward if it is translated.
The translator, beside choosing word to easy to be understood, she sometimes changed the position of the sentence. For example, “…but his words drowned by along, loud belch from the Dursley’ son, Dudley.” It is translated “…tetapi kata-katanya tenggelam oleh sendawa Dudley yang keras dan panjang. Dudley adalah anak Mr dan Mrs Dursley.” She made a good decision to change it because that is the way to tell in Indonesian’s style. And also she is very good in choosing another word to make the meaning and the atmosphere in the original story can be conveyed through Indonesian. She did not use the real meaning from dictionary. So, she used contextual meaning.
In other way, if there are terms original English that have been familiar with Indonesian, the translator did not translate them. We can found in the sentence,”…, mengenyakkan diri di bangku kebun dan bernyanyi pelan,” Happy Birthday to me…happy Birthday to me…” Because if it had been translated, the translating would be sounds freak. And also in words “Mr., Mrs.”
Here, I also found that there are something that not usual be called in Indonesia. For example in sentence when Harry says “You’ve forgotten the magic word”. Magic word means “kata sihir”. Then Harry meant that it was word “please.” In reality in English culture, “please” is one of magic word instead of “sorry” and “thank you.”
In conclusion, I think that the translator has done her job well. She can make a transition that easy to understand and able to delivering the major message of the author since the plot is organized well. Because the ability of translator is not only can translate word s by words. He/she have to understand both the culture,too.

Translation which comes from the word “translate” means giving meaning of (sth said or written) in another language. On doing translation a translator should consider many aspects. They should read both in native language and in target language.
The translation of the worst birthday on Harry potter and the Chamber of secret are good enough because the translator use right diction (choice and use of word, style and manner of speaking and writing).
The using of right diction is very important because the feeling or the idea of the story will be gotten if the translaor use the right word to show the idea so that the reader will get the point. If the translator doesn’t use the right diction, the reader will not get what the writer want to share so the translator should have a lot of vocabulary in order to be able to choose best word. Examples of the right diction used in the worst birthday translation are:
1. The word “broken out” translated in Indonesia as”meledak”. It is good diction because it gives sense that it is more than a common quarrel. It is a loud voice from Mr. Vernon Dursley. It is like a bomb which is ready make a mess.
2. The phrase “in the early hours of the morning” translated in Indonesia as”pagi-pagi buta” it really has sense of Indonesia. It is really good because it has meansearly in the morning when most of people don’t get up yet.
3. The clause “his hopes hadn’t been high” Translated in Indonesia as “Tentu saja harapanya tak muluk-muluk”. Is is a good diction because it sounds so Indonesia and gives more sense than another.
4. The word “clutches” translated in Indonesia as “cengkraman”. It is a good choice of word because it usually has meaning “genggaman”. With the used of word “cengkraman”give more sense than “genggaman”. It is a clutch from the greatest dark sorcener of all the time, Lord Voldemort, whose name most witches and wizards still feared to speak and not from another wizard.
The lack of the translation is sometimes the translator decrease the words that should exist in the sentence but the tanslator don’t give special meaning to the words but the meanig is acceptable although he don’t use the words. It doesn’t really means for the reader but if the readers know the eal text, they will know the lack. There are some examples of its. They are:
1. The clause “he roared across the table” translated in Indonesia “raungnya” but it should “raungnya melewati meja”.
2. The clause “Mrs. Dursley gave a small scream and clapped her hands to her mouth” translated in Indonesia as “Mrs. Dursley menjerit dan menutup mulutnya”. It should “Mrs. Dursley sedikit menjerit dan menutup mulutnya dengan tangannya” to be more complete.
3. The clause “I will announce the dinner”, said aunt Petunia. Translated in Indonesia” Akan kuumumkan makan malam telah siap,” kata bibi Petunia. It should “Akan kuumumkan tentang makan malamnya”.
Although the translator sometimes decrease and encrease the translation but the meaning is still acceptable.
As we know, choice of word or diction is very important in translation. In the worst birthday translation there are some lacks of translation. They are:
1. The word “control” translated in Indonesia as “mengontrol” but it should “mengatur”because the word “mengontol” is not really suitable with the context.
2. The clause “Harry tried to argue” translated in Indonesia as “Harry mencoba berargumentasi” but it should “Harry mencoba berpendapat” because the word “berargumensi” means of opinion and not something believed.
3. The word “at any moment” translated in Indonesia as “setiap waktu”. It should “kapan saja” because “kapan saja” is better to describe any moment.
4. The clause “Harry looked nothing like the rest of the family”translated in Indonesia as “Tampilan Harry sama sekali lain dari keluarganya”It should “Penampilan Harry sangat berbeda dengan keluarganya”. Because it translate word by word it sounds rather strange to Indonesian. So the translator should choose best word.
5. The sentence “Why he keep making odd things happen without meaning to” translated to Indonesia by the translator “tak penah memahami mengapa dia tak putus-putus membuat hal-hal aneh terjadi walaupaun dia tak bermaksud melakukannya” it should”tak pernah memahami mengapa dia terus membuat hal-hal aneh terjadi waaupun dia tak bermaksud melakukannya” word “tak putus-putus” should change to be “terus” because it is more effective, efficient and communicative.
6. The clause “he cross the lawn, slumped down on the garden bench” tanslated in Indonesia as “Dia menyebrangi halaman, mengenyakkan diri di bangku kebun” it sounds so strage, he word “mengenyakkan diri” is not familiar with Indonesian ears. It should “Dia melewati halaman, berbaring di bangku kebun”. It is more familiar and communicative.
7. The phrase “ A huge mound of whipped cream” translated in Indonesia as “dihiasi seonggok krim”it should ” dihiasi setumpuk krim”because the word “seonggok” is not suitable with the word “cream”
In conclussion, the translation of the worst bithday has some lack, especially in diction, sense of Indonesian, the arrangement of the sentences and some vagueness of the meaning. Bu we can find the using of right diction in this translation, too.

Analysing the Quality of the Translation of Chapter One of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret: the Worst Birthday
Harry Potter books written by J.K. Rowling are great. The books which take place in England have an interesting story. Even the films are also well-known. The main character is Harry Potter. Harry Potter is a wizard who goes to Hogwarts for witches and wizards. There are seven series of Harry Potter books. One of them is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret. Now I want to try to analyse the quality of the translation of the chapter one of it: The Worst Birthday which has been translated into Indonesian by Listiana Srisanti. After I read both it’s original text and it’s translation, I find some mistakes or mistranslations. But for the whole, according to me, the translation is almost perfect. It is easy to understand and I can catch her words. Sometimes, if it is necessary, she combined other words which are different with those original texts. For example, she translated the sentence “WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU” into “BUKANKAH SUDAH KULARANG” not “APA YANG SUDAH AKU KATAKAN KEPADAMU”. From this example, we can say that she is unfaithful with the translations. I mean she did not translate word-by-word. In my opinion, so far it is good. It is more understandable and acceptable to read. Other example, “Dudley was blond, pink and porky,” she translated “Dudley berambut pirang, kulitnya agak merah jambu, jadi kesannya seperti babi.” It is sounds better because I can catch the meaning of this sentence. The last example, the sentence “This was too much for both Aunt Petunia and Harry” she translated “Ini sudah kelewatan, baik bagi Bibi Petunia maupun Harry, walaupun dengan alasan yang berbeda.
Now, let’s check the mistakes out one by one. The first mistake I find is the sentence “he roared across the table”. In my opinion, it should be translated “raungnya dari seberang meja”, but the translator only wrote “raungnya”. Then the sentence “If I could just let her out at night…,” I think it should be translated “Kalau aku hanya bisa melepasnya di malam hari…” The word “just” is important so it should not be skipped. Another example, the word “dangling” should be translated “menguntai” not “bergantung”. It is difficult to imagine something “bergantung” on a moustache. Next is the sentence “Harry tried to argue back”. She translated “Harry mencoba beragumentasi” and it is sound better “Harry mencoba membantah”. After that, “Dudley, who was so large his bottom drooped over either side of the kitchen chair,…” according to me, it should be translated “Dudley, yang luar biasa gemuknya sampai permukaan kursi pun tak terlihat karena tertutupi bokongnya yang besar.” Because the words “bokongnya melimpah” are sound strange for me. Then, the sentence “.., tetapi Dudley mengatakan hal yang persis sedang Harry pikirkan…” should be added some words, so it becomes “…, tetapi Dudley mengatakan hal yang persis sedang Harry pikirkan tentang dirinya sendiri…” Next, the sentence “weeks later” should be translated “beberapa minggu kemudian.“ The last is the sentence “Wish they could see famous Harry Potter now,” which should be translated “Semoga saja mereka bisa melihat Harry Potter yang terkenal sekarang,” and not “Sayang sekali mereka tak bisa melihat Harry Potter sekarang.”
Beside some mistakes I have mentioned above, I also find some error punctuations. The translator should pay attention not only the appropriate words but also the punctuations of each sentence like coma, full stop, semi colon, etc. For example, on the page 9, the sentence “… yang kehabisan napas. Dia memandang Harry…” and based on the original text it should be written “… yang kehabisan napas dan memandang Harry…” Another example, on the page 15, “…, dia merindukan sahabat-sahabatnya. Ron Weasley dan Hermione Granger.”, it should be written “…, dia merindukan sahabat-sahabatnya, Ron Weasley dan Hermione Granger.”
In conclusion, I realize that to be a good translator is not easy because it needs more skills but overall the translation is good enough. The translator is able to convey the message which is contented in the story. I can feel Harry Potter’s sadness when no one sent him a letter all summer and remember his birthday even his best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, more over when all people at his home ignored him. Even though the translation is understandable, the translator should also pay attention the dictions.

After I have read the whole chapter 1 of “Harry Potter of the Chamber of Secret” entitled the worst birthday, I found some words, phrase, and even sentence that in my opinion the quality of the translation isn’t good enough. So I try to analyze and find the words that are more proper based on my opinion. As one word in English has different meaning depends on its context, we have to be careful in translating it so that we can convey the meaning properly. Some problems that happen are the lack of vocabulary from the translator, so they may translate the English words based on the original meaning without notice its context and also sometimes the translator ignore some part of the sentence so he doesn’t translate it or we can say the do skipping in some parts of the sentence. To make it clear, pay attention to some example follows. I will show those all as follows and also the more proper translation should be based on my opinion in order the translation can the original words in English make sense and doesn’t change the original meaning from the author and also sounds more polite for our culture. Here they are:
1. “Do I look stupid?” (page 7, line 10)
The meaning in Indonesia based on the translator: “Apa aku kelihatan bodoh?”
More proper meaning based on my opinion is “Memangnya aku bodoh?”
2. Argue back in the sentence: Harry tried to argue back (page 7, line 14)
The meaning in Indonesia based on the translator: Berargumentasi
More proper meaning based on my opinion: Melawan/menentang
3. Drooped over in the sentence: … his bottom drooped over either side…(page 7 line 24)
The meaning in Indonesia based on the translator: bokongnya melimpah
More proper meaning based on my opinion is pantatnya memenuhi.
4. Clapped her hands to her mouth in the sentence: …and clapped her hands to her mouth; (page 8, line 1)
The meaning in Indonesia based on the translator: menutup mulutnya.
More proper meaning based on my opinion is menutup mulutnya dengan tangannya.
5. What have I told you in the sentence: WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU, ‘thundered his uncle,…(page 8, line 4)

6. He was as not normal as it is possible to be (page 8, line 22)

8. Neckless in the sentence: …was large and neckless,…(page 9,line 9)

9. May I take in the sentence “May I take your coats, Mr and Mrs Mason?”(page 10, line 18)
The meaning in Indonesia based on the translator: boleh kusimpan.

10. Stay out, in the sentence ‘You stay out of your aunt’s way while she’s cleaning.’(page 11, line 20)

11. All summer, in the sentence: Neither of them had written to him all summer (page 11, line 31)
The meaning in Indonesia based on the translator: Musim panas ini.

More proper meaning based on my opinion is tak terhitung banyaknya.
Conclusion
The overall translation of the whole chapter 1 of the book “Harry Potter and the Chamber of secret” entitled “The Worst Birthday” is good enough because in my opinion the translator successfully convey the meaning of the original one based on our culture although mistranslations sometimes happen. He makes the translation of that book easily understood and interesting to be read. So the reader enjoy reading and can feel the rhythm of the story.

LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TRANSLATION : THE TRANSLATION PROBLEMS OF “ HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRET” BOOK
Language is considered to be an exclusively human mode of communication. Language is a means to express ideas, opinions and feelings. English, however, is the most important language, since it is used as the “ universal language”.
In learning a language, particularly English as the target language, we must get acquinted and learn its vocabulary or sentences. But how could we understand their meaning and equivalent in our mother language? That’s why translation plays an important role in learning language, too. We can strictly say that translation is used to make similar meaning and also perception between mother language and target language in order to convey the message.
As I have stated above, English, the most important language, is found in both spoken and written forms. I also have discussed shortly that translation also plays an important role in learning language. We can see that so many kinds of book; such as : text book, journal, novel, poems and other written literature, are in English. For people with little or no-knowledge in English, it is extremely difficult for them to learn and understand the contents of those book. How could they read and understand an English novel, for example, if they have their heart set on reading it; meanwhile, they only have little or no comprehension in English at all. In this case, translation, by translating them from the original to the Indonesian version, is very needed and unavoidable.
On the “ Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” novel, which is a translated book, the translation is good enough. It is very helpful as entertainment for those who are reading-lover with little or no comprehension in English to read and enjoy its story. The book is really well-known and best-seller. It have been translated into so many languages all over the world, including Indonesian. In Indonesian, its title is translated into “Harry Potter dan Kamar Rahasia”.
Reading the first chapter of the novel, make us attracted and curious to continue the next chapter and the whole story. The translator translate the sentences of the novel in an appropriate way and adjust them-he adapt to the Indonesian-so the reader could understand and enjoy the story. The translation is also keep on track; that is, it is based on the context of the original text appropriately.
The translated novel, however, also has several problems in its translation; that is,is not as good and enchant as the original novel, for instance. On the original version, the words and sentences are structured beautifully line by line from the first paragraph until the last one. The reader could imagine the description on the story in their mind. Yet, it will be different when we read the Indonesian version, which is not as splendor as our imagination reading the original novel. Whether we like or not, our imagination and perception about the story in Indonesian version will change and move, after reading the original one.
Another problem, we will also find several strange equivalents or meanings from the English to Indonesian version. For instance, on the third line of the first paragraph, are written “by a loud,hooting noise” which are translated into “bunyi uhu-uhu”. For Indonesian people-only with little English knowledge- the meaning is extremely strange! In my opinion, in order to make the reader easily to understand and avoid misconception, it’s better to choose the better choice of words or diction.
In spite of the fact that the translator has many experience in translating, he could not present the “special sense of beautiful” of the original version; thus, when we read the Indonesian version we could not feel that sense. Moreover, the translation could only show little aspect of cross culture understanding; therefore, the translation is rather different from the original purpose.
In translating, we could not merely concern on its translation and ignore other aspect of language skills or cross culture understanding. We have to pay attention to lexical and gramatical structure ,too ; for they also donate their rules in the language. And in addition, we must not translate them through word-by-word-translation or only based on dictionary. Whether we like or not, we have to translate them in context in order not to create “a strange translation”. However, it also need the comprehension and capability of reading skills beside experience in translating. Yet, it’s also unavoidable that there will always some problems block our way, for there are some different aspect and culture background between the two languages: that are, the original and the translation language.

Harry Potter is one kind of best seller book, because of the amazing story that was written by J.K Rowling. But here I will not analyze her story, but just analyzing the translation quality. More specific, I want to analyze the first chapter of the second book from Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret.
- ..,loud belch from the Dursley’ son, Dudley. (paragraph 7, page 7)
(…sendawa Dudley yang keras dan panjang. Dudley adalah anak Mr dan MRS Dursley)
We can see that in the original texts, the writer just use “Dursley’ son, Dudley. But in the Indonesian version, the translator use one more sentence so that the reader can catch the meaning of the sentence.
- .;Mrs Dursley gave a small scream and…. (the last paragraph on page 7)
Mrs Dursley menjerit dan…..
In that sentence, small scream was translated as menjerit . the reader of Indonesian version will not now what kind of “menjerit” here, because the translator didn’t give more explanation. The reader may be imagine that Mrs Dursley scream aloud or some other kind of screaming.

Witchcraft and Wizardry weren’t translated into Indonesia and also weren’t rewrite in the Indonesian version.

Top-of-the-range here just translated to ‘top’ in Indonesia, I think it was not specific enough.
‘broomstick’ was translated to ‘sapu’. It was adapted into Indonesia; in Indonesia we say ‘sapu’ not ‘sapu tongkat’ or tongkat sapu’.
- It was his scar that made Harry so particular unusual….(paragraph 3 on page 9)

Unusual was translated into istimewa by the translator. In fact, the translator wants to build Harry’s character by give positive touch there. As we know, unusual can be translated into tidak biasa or aneh.

(…lukanya didapatnya dalam kecelakaan lalulintas….)
The words car crash, were given meaning as kecelakaan lalulintas. It’s clearly seen that it were translated generally. Car crash should be translated to tabrakan mobil, or something other like kecelakaan mobil.
- “I’ll be in my bedroom, making no noise and pretending I’m not there”….(paragraph 12 page 10)
“Aku akan berada di kamarku, tidak membuat suara, dan pura-pura tidak ada di sana”……)
In my opinion,instead of tidak membuat suara,making no noise can be translated into another words that more familiar in Indonesia; tak bersuara.Pretending here, I think would be more acceptable if we use seolah-olah, because the meaning will be more appropriate with the context.

…Gaun Anda indah sekali, dimana Anda membeli, Mrs Mason?”
Gaun Anda indah sekali can’t be seen in the original texts. We should not improve too much words, because it’s not our authority.

(“….Kita akan membeli rumah berlibur di Majorca pada jam sekian besok malam.”)
The writer used this just because it was related to the time when Mr. Vernon said. I mean sekian refers to time that has no exact limitation of time.

Sudah puluhan kali, Harry hamper membuka kandang Hedwig ……
Countless time, if I imagine, it means so many times, unlimited. It could be hundreds or even thousands of time. So I think it’s simplifying Harry’s effort when translated to puluhan kali.
- “….How come you haven’t got any cards?....”(paragraph 11 page 12)
(“Kenapa kau tidak menerima kartu satupun?...”)
How come has more in giving stress when it is spoken, and we will feel the difference when we use Kenapa, as if no expression there. It will be difference when we use bagaimana mungkin, it’s more expressive.
- “…..MUUUUM! He’s doing you know what!” (paragraph 5 page 13)
(“…..MUUUUM! Dia melakukan yang tak boleh itu!”)
In this sentence, the translator made an improvement. I agree with him, because it will be confused when he translated you know what into kau tahu apa. The best translation for that words, I think, yang tak boleh itu, although if we search the meaning in our dictionary, no relation at all. But it is be a good sentence, and more meaningful sentence when we use yang tak boleh itu.
- ….Harry caught a glimpse of Uncle Vernon and Dudley in bow-ties and dinner jackets….(paragraph 1 page 14)
(….sekilas Harry melihat Paman Vernon dan Dudley memakai jas dan dasi kupu-kupu…)
Dinner jackets here were translated into jas. I think the reason is in Indonesia we use jacket dinner in formal dinner, but jas, so translator say so.
I don’t know the reason why bow-ties and dinner jackets in the original version have changed into jas dan dasi kupu-kupu. As far as I know, a translator does not need to change that kind of form.
- “Remember, boy-one sound…” (paragraph 3 page 14)
(“Ingat-suara sekecil apapun…”)
The Indonesian version should be added by Nak as the translation from boy.
In my opinion, one sound has the difference meaning with suara sekecil apapun. It has difference sense of stressing.
In summaries the original version and the Indonesian version of the book Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, especially the first chapter has a standard quality, because readers caught the sense the J.K Rowling wants to share. On the other hand, there are so many errors, or inappropriate meaning so I can’t say it is good.

After I read the text chapter 1 of “ Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets” and its translation in Indonesian language, I find some awkward words in the text.
I start analyze from the 1st paragraph. In this paragraph on sentence “ bukan untuk pertama kalinya pertengkaran meledak di meja makan rumah privet drive no 4”. We shouldn’t use word meledak but we can use word terjadi. Usually word meledak is sound that used to word like dynamite,bomb,and etc. in 2nd and 3rd paragraph I’m not find any word which is awkward for me, because I can understand it. I find word which is awkward for me in 4th paragraph on the sentence “seserpih telur bergantung pada kumisnya yang lebat “.in my opinion should used word secuil telur, not seserpih telur. In 5th paragraph I’m not find difficulty, but in 6th paragraph on sentence “Aku mau tambah daging asap” we should use sentence “aku ingin daging asap lagi. Although sentence “Aku mau tambah daging asap” it’s right, but in Indonesian language it’s informal or Indonesian people called “ bahasa tidak baku “. Then, in the next paragraph on sentence “kami harus memberimu makan banyak-banyak selagi ada kesempatan”. It’s also informal and we can change become “ketika kami mempunyai kesempatan, kami harus memberimu makan sebanyak mungkin”. In 8th, 9th, and 10th paragraph I’m not find any awkward word, I know and I can understand it. In 11th paragraph on sentence “maksudku kata ‘tolong’!” kata harry cepat-cepat. Cepat-cepat in here is right, but it can more effective if Cepat-cepat change with dengan cepat. so, it can be “ maksudku kata ‘tolong’!” kata harry dengan cepat. In 12th paragraph on sentence “ Bukankah sudah kularang !” gelegar pamannya. gelegar in here can change to seru pamannya, because gelegar is sound of thunderclap, not for uncle. In 13th Paragraph on sentence “berani-beraninya kau mengancam Dudley !” raung paman Vernon. Raung should change to seru paman Vernon, because of word Raung usually used to animal. Then on sentence “ kemudian menggebrak meja dengan tinjunya”. Word tinjunya can change with “ kepalan tangannya”, because kepalan tangannya more familiar for Indonesian people. The next paragraph on sentence “ aku Cuma…” should change with “ aku hanya ...” Because “ aku Cuma…” is informal or “bahasa tidak baku” in Indonesian language. In 15th paragraph I’m not find difficult word and I can understand it. In 16th paragraph, between “ kehabisan nafas and dia memandang” should not use full stop (.) but use conjunction and, so the sentence become “ paman Vernon duduk kembali tersengal seperti badak bercula satu yang kehabisan nafas dan dia memandang harry melalui sudut matanya yang kecil tajam”. In paragraph 17th until 20th I know and understand the meant of the writer. In 21st paragraph on the beginning of the sentence “tampilan harry” should change with “penampilan Harry”, because it is more effective. In 22nd until 23rd paragraph I’m not find problem. In 24th paragraph on sentence “ dia melewatkan 10 tahun bersama keluarga Dursley, dia tak pernah memahami kenapa dia tak putus-putus membuat hal-hal aneh terjadi walaupun dia tak bermaksud melakukannya”. Kenapa dia tak putus-putus can change become “mengapa dia tidak berhenti”. In 25th until 51st paragraph I’m not find awkward word and I can understand it. In 52nd paragraph on sentence “tetapi lama tak ada kabar dari Ron dan Hermione membuat Harry semakin terkucil, sehingga bahkan mempermainkan Dudley pun sudah tak menarik lagi”. In this sentence, word bahkan should not used because if that word is used, it is will make the reader confused. 53rd until 58th paragraph on page 16 I feel there is no difficult words to understand. 59th paragraph on sentence “apa kau tidak punya teman di tempat sinting itu ?” using word sinting in here can change with “tidak waras” because sinting in Indonesian language included in “kata tidak baku “.In 59th until the last paragraph I’m not find awkward and difficult words, I can understand it.
After I analyze the paragraph one by one I can find the awkward words and the words that is not exact with the text. On the other hand, I also find informal word or “kata tidak baku” in Indonesian language such as “Cuma and sinting”. although in here I found some awkward words, almost all of the readers can understand and know what is content of the books. In fact they still wait the next edition of Harry potter’s book.
ANALYSIS ON THE QUALITY OF TRANSLATION OF THE NOVEL: “HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS” (CHAPTER 1)

I would like to report what I’ve learned and scrutinized from the given excerpt. What I’ve learned from the original version of the novel (English version) is that this novel is enriched by no end of variety in the combinations of its each word and sentence. I analyzed the excerpt from its several elements, which are:
Class of words and its identification
Basic pattern and sentence elements
Sentence patterns: Variety and Tenses
Sentence analysis (simple, compound, and complex sentence)
Gerund, free adjunct, elliptic, inversion, and conditional sentence
Apart from the above elements, I also reviewed it from its accuracy, logic, and clarity. Due to the fact that language reflects the culture in which it is used, from its idioms and also its figurative languages (based on my literature review).
Class of words and its identification
There are nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, article, adverbs, and prepositions. Each of this class of words then is improved into phrases and clauses. I took the nouns to be analyzed since this class of words is very expandable. For example, the noun BELCH is expanded into noun phrase: A LONG, LOUD BELCH. The translator could translate this noun phrase quite satisfactorily acceptable in Indonesian language as “SENDAWA YANG KERAS DAN PANJANG.” Other examples are: PURPLE-FACED=”WAJAH UNGU” and A THIN, LIGHTNING-SHAPED SCAR=”BEKAS LUKA (TIPIS) BERBENTUK SAMBARAN KILAT”. But there is an awkward translation of ENORMOUS BLACK MOUSTACHE=”KUMIS HITAM BESAR.” In my opinion, this translation is technically precise but not for the diction. The more precise translation should be “KUMIS HITAM YANG LEBAT.”
Basic pattern and sentence elements
A high comprehension of basic pattern and sentence elements will enable translator to translate the text precisely. For instance the sentence IT WAS HIS SCAR THAT MADE HARRY SO PARTICULARLY UNUSUAL=”BEKAS LUKA INILAH YANG MEMBUAT HARRY ISTIMEWA.” Instead of that, the sentence can also be translated as “BEKAS LUKANYALAH YANG MEMBUAT HARRY TERLIHAT BERBEDA/ISTIMEWA.”
3. Sentence patterns: Variety and Tenses
Most of the sentences use simple past tense and past perfect tense (since the author viewed herself as the third person point of view). In the direct sentence of the characters, she used simple present tense.
4. Sentence analysis (simple, compound, and complex sentence)
Example of simple sentence: YOU’VE FORGOTTEN THE MAGIC WORD=”KAU LUPA KATA SIHIRNYA.” (technically and lexically acceptable in Indonesian language)
Example of compound sentence: THE HUGE EYES LINKED AND VANISHED=”MATA BESAR ITU BERKEDIP LALU LENYAP.” (technically and lexically acceptable in Indonesian language)
Example of complex sentence: WHILE DUDLEY LOLLED AROUND WATCHING AND EATING ICE-CREAMS, HARRY CLEANED THE WINDOWS, WASHED THE CAR, MOWED THE LAWN, TRIMMED THE FLOWERBEDS, PRUNED AND WATERED THE ROSES AND REPAINTED THE GARDEN BENCH.
5. Gerund, free adjunct, elliptic, inversion, and conditional sentence
Example of gerund: FRYING in the FRYING PAN which means “PENGGORENGAN” not “MENGGORENG.”
Example of free adjunct: AUNT PETUNIA SNAPPED, POINTING TO TWO SLICE OF BREAD.
Example of conditional sentence:
Conditional clause type 1: I KNOW WHAT’LL HAPPEN IF THAT OWL’S LET OUT.
Conditional clause type 2: WISH THEY COULD SEE FAMOUS HARRY POTTER NOW.

Technically, the translator has done her job well in translating the novel but lexically she is still inaccurate in finding the precise meaning of the words according to the context since mostly she seems to use the word-to-word translation. When a translator cannot find the precise meaning of a word, there will be a communication breakdown caused by the linguistic or cultural differences. It is also aimed to avoid misinterpretation and ambiguity; so that the readers may have a crystal clear visualization of the characters or settings. Primarily, the translation must enable the readers to get the message of the text.
Though the translator mostly used word-to-word method, she has the strength in interpreting the idioms and figurative languages of the text well. They are:

THE ‘COMMON’ POTTER
Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret which is published in 1998 was one of the best seller novels at that time. The Potter’s story was read and known by all children and adults all over the world. There are many reasons why people like this novel, one of them is because a good construction of words, sentences, and paragraphs.
I named this essay with the 'Common' Potter because in this novel ( Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret, chapter 1 the worst birthday ) the translator built up the novel into Indonesian version without using a diction or a good choice of words and vocabs, in the other word it is too simple and common. In one hand, English and Indonesia have many differences in many aspects of language, it has a different pattern, different composition, and etc. And in the other hand, it has similarity in having many vocabularies and styles in arranging a sentence. We can use a proper word in the translating process to convey a good meaning with a good style of language so that the reader still can enjoy it and the real meaning is accepted well.
In English version, this novel uses a good arrangement and many idiomatic expressions ( dark look, I am off into, etc ) in order to beautify the novel and make the reader more excited and pleasure to read. A good choice of word is also found in English version novel. The writer uses many vocabularies which is not usually found in our daily language that make it special.
But not in Indonesian version.
The translator has only translated the novel into Indonesian language with a very standard language that make the novel is not as good as the English version. The translator is only translated one language into another without translated the art and its beauty. I know that the translators did not have any rights to add or corrupt the object of translation, but they were not forbidden to make it as beautiful as the real source. For example, with the way of arrangement and using a good vocabularies. For instance, the sentence : “Dudley, who was so large his bottom dropped over either side of kitchen chair...”, that was translated : “Dudley, yang luar biasa gemuknya sampai pantatnya melimpah di kiri – kanan kursi dapur...”. The suffix “nya” in the word “gemuknya” should be dropped off.
The clause : “The Masson“ which is translated ”suami istri Masson“ is sounded awkward. It is better to use : “keluarga Masson”.
The other awkward translation that I found in this novel are :
“Third time this week” he roared across the table. That was translated : “Untuk ketiga kalinya minggu ini” raungya.
The clause “across the table” are not found in the Indonesian version, the translator has corrupted it.
“Sleeping in his four poster bed in the tower dormitory” which was translated : “Tidur di tempat tidurnya di menara asrama”.
The clause “his four poster bed are corrupted.
“And on his forehead was a thin, lightning shaped scar” which was translated : “ Dan di dahinya ada bekas luka berbentuk sambaran kilat”.
The word thin is corrupted, so that it made the reader confused whether the scar is big, small, many, or the other.
“Over his cabin in the ground next to the forbidden forest” that was translated : “Di pondoknya di dekat hutan terlarang”.
It will sound better if the sentence become “Di pondoknya yang terletak di dekat hutan terlarang”.
“This scar was the only hint of Harry's very mysterious past...”, that was translated : “Bekas luka ini satu – satunya petunjuk akan masa lalu Hary yang misterius”.
“Very” is disappeared.
“...never understanding why he kept making odd things happen without meaning to”, that was translated : “...tak putus – putus membuat hal – hal aneh terjadi walaupun dia tak bermaksud melakukannya”.
It will sound better if the words “tak putus – putus” are changed to be “tak henti – hentinya”.

ANALYZING THE QUALITY OF THE TRANSLATION OF “HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS”
CHAPTER ONE
THE WORST BIRTHDAY
While reading chapter one of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret”, and its translation in Indonesian language, I found that in general the translation is good enough due to the fact that the translator is Indonesian people and the culture which is used on the book comes from England. This translation has its own difficulties based on the different culture which was translated.
There were some ways that was used by the translator when he or she translated chapter one “The Worst Birthday”.
The translator translated the text based on her or his knowledge. It was good, but it also has bad effect. In general, the quality of the translation is good enough. Therefore I only focus on the words, phrases, or sentences which are not comfortable for me. First, the translator did mistranslate in some words. For example, “Do I look stupid? snarled uncle Vernon, a bit of fried egg dangling from his busy moustache.” The translation for those words is “seserpih telur goreng.” I found a strange feeling when I read these words. I think that the word “seserpih” is inappropriate. It would be better if it was translated as “sedikit sisa telur goreng.”
In the last paragraph of page one, “Mrs.Dursley gave a small scream and clapped her hands to her mouth.” The translator translated those words as “menjerit.” It sounds good if he or she translated it become “memekik” because in Indonesian “menjerit” means screaming loudly for a while.
In the words “WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU..” it translated as “BUKANKAH SUDAH KULARANG”. The translation did it because the situation supported to do that. As a note, that it can be translated as “Bukankah sudah KUKATAKAN.” The other example is in the words “I WILL NOT TOLERATE MENTION OF YOUR….” It translated as “MENGIZINKAN”, it can be translated as “MENERIMA.”
In the 11th paragraph of page 2, the last sentence, “it was nothing to how Harry felt.” The translator translated it as “dibanding.” In my mind, it should be translated as “bagi” because it changed the meaning of the sentence.
In the 12th, the 4th line, I found that the words “eating banquets” which is translated as “makan bersama” it sounds weird for me because it change the meaning of the sentence.
The last paragraph of the 2nd page, “his wand” which is translated as “Tongkat Harry” instead of “tongkat sihir Harry”. The other example is in the last paragraph of 5th page, “countless time,…..” it was translated as “sudah puluhan kali.” It would be better if it translated as “sudah berkali-kali”
Another bad side is the translator did misinterpretation in some sentences. For example, in the first paragraph of 5th page, “this was too much…..see him laughing.” It was translated by adding phrase “……walau dengan alasan berbeda.” In the 5th paragraph, there is a sentence “with any luck,...this time tomorrow” which was translated by adding a clause “…..transaksi bisa kuselesaikan….” It should be “kontrak sudah ditandatangani dan dicap.” The translator delivered the information which is inside his or her mind, not from the writer’s.
Next, the translator eliminated words or phrases.

- 2nd paragraph of 2nd page, “about saying..”
- 9th paragraph of 2nd page, “uncle Vernon sat back….and watching…”
- 12th paragraph of 2nd page, line 5th, “his four-posted bed…”

- 3rd paragraph of 3rd page, last sentence, “….somehow….”
- 12th paragraph of 4th page,”….lounge…”
- 2nd paragraph of 5th page, “And you, boy…”
- 4th paragraph of 5th page, line 5th, “….and sealed….”
- 2nd paragraph of 6th page, last sentence, “…..wide…”
- 8th paragraph of 7th page, first sentence, “…..famous…”
Though eliminating word/s does not change the meaning of the sentence, but it will be better if the translator did not change the word/s because it is the writer’s right to do that.
The fourth bad side of the translation is the translator did inappropriate word order. The examples are;
The last paragraph of the 2nd page,”….and top-of-the-range Nimbus 2000….” It was translated as “sapu top Nimbus Dua ribunya…” it should be “Nimbus Dua ribu, sapu paling top di kelasnya.”
Last paragraph, 5th page, the 5th line, “he knew it was only their terror that he might turn them all into dung beetles that stopped them locking him in the cupboard under the stairs with his wand and broomstick.” It was translated “ Mereka takut Harry akan mengubah mereka menjadi kumbang pupuk. Dan Harry tahu, rasa takut itulah yang mencegah mereka mengunci dirinya di dalam lemari di bawah tangga, bersama tongkat dan sapunya.” It should be translated “dia tahu ini hanya ketakutan mereka, bahwa Harry mungkin mengubah mereka semua menjadi kumbang pupuk, yang mencegah mereka mengunci dirinya di dalam lemari di bawah tangga.”
Then, the translator also did form changing in some sentences, for example, the phrase “Uncle Vernon was talking about the stupid dinner party” was translated to “yang sedang dibicarakan paman Vernon adalah acara makan malam konyol itu.” It should be “paman Vernon sedang membicarakan makan malam konyol itu”, the translator changed the form of the phrase from active to passive.
The last is the use of punctuation in translating the work. While I reading both English and Indonesian version and then I compare them, I found that there were so many punctuations which were changed. The punctuations that usually changed are comma (,) and full stop (.).
That is all my analysis about the quality of the translation of the chapter one “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret”.

After reading chapter one of “Harry Potter”, The Worst Birthday in Indonesian, I realized that the translation of the chapter have two sides of points. The quality of this translation is based on my interpretation. I find the strong points and weak points of this translation.
From the strong points, I feel the translation of the book is good enough. It can be seen by the use of appropriate vocabularies. For example, “Sekolah Sihir Hogwarts” for “Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry, actually have different meaning. “witchcraft” means “penyihir wanita” and wizardry means “penyihir laki-laki”. In Indonesian the word “penyihir has included both witchcraft and wizardry. So., the “Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry” which is translated “Sekolah Sihir Hogwarts” is appropriate. Another example, the sentence of Dundley was blonde, pink, and porky is translated to Dundley berambut pirang, kulitnya agak merah jambu, jadi kesannya seperti babi. I like this translation. The use of “kesannya seperti babi for the word “porky” shows that the translator interpretation for this sentence is great point. In addition, the translator did the smart things by translating the English words which are common in Indonesian. For example, happy birthday to me…
In the short way, the strong point of the translation is the translator has good translation in sentences.
The translation of this chapter have many weak points. It can be known by the quality of translation word by word. For example, “a bit of fried egg”, the translator does misinterpretations when she translates these words into “seserpih telur goreng”. In my mind, the word “seserpih” related to “kaca”, so it would be better if she translated those words into “sedikit sisa telur goreng”. Beside that, she did a wrong translation on the page 12, the quality of the translation is not good. The sentence “Harry kept walking in the night, drenched in the cold sweat, wondering where Voldemort was now, remembering his livid face, his wade, mad eyes is translated incomplete. She did not translate the words “his wide” in order that the sentences of the translation is incomplete. It makes the quality of her translation becomes less. Another example is on page 10, the translator eliminated the word “his” in the word “his wand”. She translated this word to “tongkat”. It must be “tongkat sihirnya”. Then, the words “dark sorcerer” were translated into “penyihir hitam jahat”. Based on my interpretation, it would be better if the use of “penyihir hitam jahat” changed into “penyihir jahat”.
The weak point of the translation become more and more. I found the same mistakes. The use of Mr. and Mrs. Based on Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia, Mr. and Mrs. Are not available in Indonesian. In addition, the translator these word inconsistently. She sometimes translated these words to “suami istri” and she sometimes still use Mr. and Mrs.
Another point is about punctuation. There are many mistakes of punctuation that the translator did. The use of comma and full stop are incorrect. In some sentences, the sentences should use comma, but the writer used full stop. And in other sentences, when the writer should use full stop, she used comma. Though it doesn’t change the meaning, it will be better if she still follow the right punctuation.
Then, the write chose inappropriate lexical items. When we are translating text, we have to consider the words that we will use. If the lexical item is inappropriate or different, the meaning will be different too. In this chapter, the translator did some mistakes. We find the inappropriate lexical item in this translation. For example, “WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU..” it was translated as “BUKANKAH SUDAH KULARANG”. If we translated it into the correct word it will be “Bukankah sudah KUKATAKAN padamu.” The other example is in the words “I WILL NOT TOLERATE MENTION OF YOUR….” It translated as “MENGIZINKAN”, actually it can be translated as “MENOLERIR.” Then, the words “to how” in the sentence “it was nothing to how Harry felt…” was translated as “disbanding”. In my opinion, it will be better if she translated it become “bagi”, so the reader can understand the sentence more. The other example is the phrase “countless time” in the sentence “countless times, Harry had been on the point of unlocking Hedwig’s cage by magic and sending her to Ron and Hermioni with a letter, but it wasn’t worth the risk” as “sudah puluhan kali.” It will be much better if she translated it become “berkali-kali.”

After reading the first chapter of Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret, I can understand the story both in Indonesian and English easily. The reason is that the chosen vocabulary is familiar and catchy even without knowing the correct meaning; we still can guess the meaning. In addition, the Indonesian version of the first chapter of Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secret can describe what is told in the English version quite properly.
For example, when the writer describes the characteristics of the Dursleys.
English Version (p.9)
“Uncle Vernon was large and neck less, with an enormous black moustache; Aunt Petunia was horse-faced and bonny; Dudley was blond, pink, and porky.”
Indonesian Version (p.10)
“Paman Vernon gemuk dan tanpa leher, dengan kumis hitam besar. Bibi Petunia kurus berwajah kuda. Dudley berambut pirang, kulitnya agak merah jambu, jadi kesannya seperti babi.”
From the example above, we can see that the translation in Indonesian version is good enough. Every word in English had been properly translated into a good Indonesian, especially the word “porky” (kesannya seperti babi).
Another good fact of the translation in Indonesian version is that the translator used good vocabulary based on Ejaan Yang Disempurnakan (EYD). However, we still can catch the meaning of the story.
For example, when Dudley scared being frightened with spells by Harry
English Version (p.13)
“MUUUUUUM!” howled Dudley, tripping over his feet as he dashed back towards the house.
Indonesian Version (p.17)
“MUUUUUUM!” raung Dudley, yang tersandung kakinya sendiri dalam ketergesaannya berlari kembali ke rumah.
We can see form the example above that the Indonesian version uses the word “ketergesaan” to describe “dashed back”.
However, besides the good points, there are also a lot of weak points of this chapter. The Indonesian translation can not really interpret the intention behind the utterance in English. I have chosen one example
English Version (p.7)
“Do I look stupid?” snarled Uncle Vernon, a bit of fried egg dangling from his bushy moustache.
Indonesian Version (p.7)
“Apa aku kelihatan bodoh?” kata paman Vernon geram, seserpih telor goreng bergantung pada kumisnya yang lebat.
Focus on the phrase “a bit” which was translated in the Indonesian “seserpih”, in my opinion, it is not catchy. What I mean is the word “seserpih” is not familiar in Indonesia. The word “serpih” or “serpihan” are usually used in Indonesia. However, both “serpih” and “serpihan” do not suit to interpret the word “a bit”. I think it would be better if the word “a bit” is translated into “sedikit sisa”.
Another weak point is when the English word can not be found in Indonesia. In other words, the Indonesian translation can not really involve the whole meaning of the English version.
English Version (p.8)
Harry Potter was a wizard – a wizard fresh from his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Indonesian Version (p.9)
Harry Potter adalah penyihir—penyihir yang baru melewatkan tahun pertamanya di Sekolah Sihir Hogwarts.
The phrase “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry” can not truly be translated in Indonesian. It is due to the fact that in Indonesian, there is no term to differentiate a witch (penyihir wanita) and a wizard (penyihir pria). Therefore, the translation “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry” is just “Sekolah Sihir Hogwarts”. Here, the word “Sihir” is included witchcraft and wizardry inside.
There is also another mistake, when the Indonesian entrepreneur translated some sentences in English by changing the sentence’s form, here from interrogative sentences into positive sentences.
English Version (p.12)
What wouldn’t he give now for a message from Hogwarts? From any witch or wizard?
Indonesian Version (p.16)
Dia rela memberikan apapun untuk mendapatkan kabar dari Hogwarts. Bahkan kabar dari penyihir manapun.
Basically, there is no right for the entrepreneur to change the sentences form, even though it is to gain the proper meaning in Indonesia. Therefore, the entrepreneur should translate the English version into the Indonesian version in the same form properly. It would be better if the Indonesian version is like this
Indonesian Version (p.16)
Apa yang tidak akan dia berikan untuk sebuah pesan dari Hogwarts? Bahkan dari penyihir lain?
A mistake which actually there is no need to do happened when the entrepreneur chosen the wrong Indonesian word. She had got the meaning and almost true in translating the English word but she had chosen an Indonesian word which is misspelled.
English Version (p.12)
At the very end of last term, Harry had come face to face with none other than Lord Voldemort himself.
Indonesian Version (p.16)
Di pengujung semester terakhir mereka, Harry telah berhadapan dengan, tak lain dan tak bukan, Lard Voldemort sendiri.
We can see that the entrepreneur had chosen the word “pengujung” instead of “penghujung” to translate the phrase “at the very end”. It may be a little mistake, but if the readers notice it, they may think that actually such a kind of little mistake like this shouldn’t had happened in a great book like Harry Potter.
The biggest mistakes may be when the entrepreneur did a word corruption. I had chosen one example of this case.
English Version (p.12)
…Harry kept waking in the night, drenched in cold sweat, wondering where Voldemort was now, remembering his livid face, his wide and mad eyes…
Indonesian Version (p.16)
Bahkan sekarang, setelah lewat beberapa minggu, Harry masih terbangun di malam hari, mandi keringat dingin, bertanya-tanya dalam hati dimana Voldemot sekarang, teringat wajahnya yang pucat kelabu, matanya yang liar…
As seen in the Indonesian version that the word “wide” was not translated. For a better translation, she had better more concern with the result to gain a good and complete translation.
Basically, this chapter had been successfully translated from English to Indonesia. However, there must be black and white of the result. In some parts, the translation is so good and easily understands, but in some other parts the translation is not proper. We can understand the meaning, but the diction is not proper. There are also a lot of mistakes in punctuation, word forms and sentence forms. The entrepreneur should recall that the readers come from almost all range of ages. It would be better if the entrepreneur increases her carefulness and consistency in translating the story in order to strengthen the defense against dark translation.

CHAPTER ONE
If we analyze someone or something, we must be finding the good and the bad side of that person or that thing. After reading chapter one of “Harry Potter and the Secret of Chamber,” I also find the good and the bad side of the translation of the book. From the good and the bad side of the translation, we will know the quality of the translation. Whether it is good or not. Overall, I look this translation is good enough because the translator made it to translate the book and published it.
The good side is the translator sometime chose the most appropriate lexical items to make the words or the sentence simpler to be understood. For example, the phrase “cleaning his throat” on page 10, was translated to “berdehem”, while if we translate it according to the words, it will be “membersihkan tenggorokannya”. Another example is the phrase on page 8 “The school of witchcraft and wizardry.” Instead of translating “Sekolah kepenyihiran laki-laki dan kepenyihiran perempuan Hogwart”, the translator translated it into “Sekolah sihir Hogwart.” It makes the reader, especially in Indonesia, easier to understand because in Indonesian, there is no difference between “penyihir laki-laki dan penyihir perempuan”, they just called it “penyihir.”
The other good side is the translator in some case could be a good interpreter because he or she could understand what the writer’s meant. The example is the sentence on page 8 “Harry Potter was a wizard- a wizard fresh from his first year at Hogwart….” the translator translated it become “Harry Potter adalah penyihir-penyihir yang baru melewatkan satu tahun pertamanya di Hogwart…..” I think it was brilliant because he or she knew what the writer’s meant by, so the reader will understand more about the story.
Another good side is the translator did not translate the Happy Birthday song into Indonesian, because he or she thought that the song is familiar in Indonesia. So, when Harry sang “Happy birthday to me…..happy birthday to me….,” on page 11 it still Happy birthday to me in the translation.
Like I said before, that this translation beside has good sides, it also has bad sides. When I was reading the translation, I found there are some mistakes in this translation. The first is the translator did mistranslate in some words, such as the word “small scream” on page 7 was translated “menjerit” instead of “menjerit kecil” or “memekik.” Another example is the word “wand” was translated to “tongkat”, in fact the real meaning is “tongkat sihir.” If the translator translated it become “tongkat sihir” it will be better because that word is appropriate with the story. Then, “rhinoceros” was translated as “badak bercula satu.”
Second, the translator used inappropriate lexical items. In some cases, he or she did a great job in choosing lexical item, but he or she also made a mistake in choosing some lexical items. For example, in the words “WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU…if we translate I to the correct words, it becomes “BUKANKAH SUDAH KUKATAKAN PADAMU”. The other example is in the words “I WILL NOT TOLERATE MENTION OF YOUR ABNORMALITY UNDER THIS ROOF.” The word “tolerate” was translated as “MENGIZINKAN”. It will be better if he or she translated it to “MENOLERIR.” Then, the words “eating banquets” in phrase “eating banquets in the Great Hall” was translated as “makan bersama” instead of “jamuan pesta.” When we are doing translation, we have to consider the words that we will use, because the meaning will be different if we wrong in choosing the lexical item.
Next, the translator translated the words apple by apple. It means that he or she translated the text word by word and he or she did not see the context. It will make the reader confuse if he or she did it because maybe the sentence that is translated become weird. For example, the word “purple-faced” in the sentence “Harry stared from his purple-faced uncle to his pale aunt,….” was translated “wajah keunguan pamannya”. Maybe in the writer’s country, “wajah keunguan” has a meaning. However, in Indonesian we do not know the meaning of “wajah keunguan”. If the translator did not translate it related to the context, the reader will not understand.
Then, the translator did misinterpretation in some sentences. If the translator could not catch what the writer’s meant, he or she would deliver wrong meaning to the reader and I think, that is a big mistake. For instance, the words “to how” in the phrase “it was nothing to how Harry felt” was translated “itu bukan apa-apa dibanding perasaan Harry.” In my opinion, the phrase should be translated as “itu bukan apa-apa bagi Harry.”
After that, the translator changed the form of the sentence and the words order. The example of form changing is the phrase “Uncle Vernon was talking about the stupid dinner party” was translated to “yang sedang dibicarakan paman Vernon adalah acara makan malam konyol itu.” It should be “paman Vernon sedang membicarakan makan malam konyol itu.” (active-pasive), and the example of the changing of the words order is the noun phrase “top-of-the-range Nimbus Two Thousand broomstick…” was translated in Indonesian into “sapu top Nimbus Dua Ribunya”, it should be “nimbus 2000, sapu paling top di kelasnya.” Even though, it doesn’t change the meaning, we have no right to change other person’s work.
There are other mistakes that were done by the translator, for example the use of punctuation which is improper, the translator adding and eliminating some words, such as “the greatest dark sorcerer of all time”. The translator translated it to “penyihir hitam jahat” and it was too much. Though it is really influence the meaning, I think as a translator he or she must consider it too.
To sums up my analysis, the quality of the translation of chapter one “Harry Potter and the Secret of Chamber” is good enough on the surface. However, if we look at it closer, there are some mistakes in translating the work whether the use of the words, the form of the phrase or the sentence.

Analyzing the translation in Indonesian language of the chapter 1 of Harry Potter and Chamber of secrets, generally, I think the quality of this translation is good. The first thing is the translator use the appropriate diction to translate the sentences. For example, (page 10) “…cleared his throat importantly…”. The Indonesian translation of this sentence is “berdehem dengan lagak sok penting”. If we translate this sentence word by word it will be dengan tidak penting membersihkan kerongkongannya”. Another example is the sentence (page 11) “ but it wasn’t worth the risk”. The Indonesian translation is “terlalu besar resikonya”. The translator translated this sentence with the catchy word so the reader can understand more. She also translated the difficult word into the simpler one.
Another reason that supports my judgement about this translation is in some sentences, the translator didn’t translate the whole words, she eliminated translating some words that is unuseful. We can see on page 8 “Harry Potter was a wizard- a wizard fresh from his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry”. She translated the word “Witchcraft and Wizardy” that in Indonesian it should be “Kepenyihiran wanita dan Kepenyihiran laki-laki” only into “penyihir”.
Another example is on page 11 “It was a brilliant, sunny day” is translated into “cuaca amat cerah”. If the translator translated the word ‘brilliant’ maybe it will be “cuaca yang cemerlang dan cerah”. In addition is on page 12 “Harry had enjoyed muttering nonsense words, under his breath and…, this sentence is translated in Indonesian into “Harry menikmati menggumamkan kata-kata omong kosong dan….” The translator eliminated translating some words that is ‘under his breath’ that is unuseful because the translation is clear.
Beside the good sides, the Indonesian translation of this chapter also has some weak points. There are some points that I can analyze. First, it is about the lexical item choices. Some of the words in some sentences translated in the inappropriate way, such as the sentence “his bottom dropped over” (page 7). The word “dropped over” is translated into “melimpah”. I think it is more appropriate and catchy if we translate this word with “gemuk”. Another word is “Wand” (page 8) which has Indonesian translation “tongkat”, based on the context of the sentence and the story, I think it is better if we translated this word into “tongkat sihir”, to make it more clear. I also found another example that is “Whipped cream” (page 13), the Indonesian translation of this words is “seonggok krim”. I think the word “seonggok” is not proper to describe the ‘whipped cream’. Therefore, maybe we just can translate it into another meaning like “krim kocok” that is more usual in our everyday life.
The second point from the bad sides is there are some misinterpretation like in the sentence on page 8, “And if the Dursleys were unhappy to have him back for the holidays, it was nothing to how Harry felt”. The translation is “Dan jika keluarga Dursleys tidak senang menerimanya selama liburan, itu bukan apa-apa dibanding perasaan Harry”. From my point of view, it will be better if we translate it into “itu tidak menjadi masalah bagi Harry”.
The next analysis is about the word order. What I meant with the word order is that in translating some phrases the translator didn’t give an appropriate order. For instance, the noun phrase “top-of-the-range Nimbus Two Thousand broomstick…” (page 8) is translated in Indonesian into “sapu top Nimbus Dua Ribunya”. Actually, this translation didn’t change the meaning, but I suggest that the translation is supposed to be “Nimbus Dua Ribu sapu paling top di antara lainnya”.
The translator also did some form changing. We can see from the sentence, “What wouldn’t he give now for a message from Hogwarts?” that is translated “dia rela memberikan apa pun untuk mendapatkan kabar dari Hogwarts”, the translator changed the form of sentences from interrogative to affirmative. Although the meaning is actually the same but it will be better if she didn’t change the form.
As I mention above about the good side of the translation, the translator didn’t translate the whole words, she eliminated translating some words that is unuseful. However, in some cases, she also didn’t translate some words such as in the noun phrase (page 9) “a thin, lightning-shaped scar”. The Indonesian translation from this phrase is “luka berbentuk sambaran kilat”. When we read this phrase and translated in Indonesian, we can describe the scar with different imagination, so we will think that the scar is big, thin, small, etc. I think it will be clear if the translator translated the word ‘thin’, so the translation of this phrase will be “luka tipis berbentuk sambaran kilat”.
The last bad side of the translation that I can analyze is about punctuation. There are so many mistakes in using the punctuation such as full stop (.), comma (,), colon (:), and semi colon (;). The use of colon and semi colon doesn’t too much affect the quality of the translation, but the use of comma and full stop give effect to this translation. One of the examples is in the sentence (page 1) “…, Aunt Petunia knew he hadn’t really done magic, but he still had to duck...” the translation is “Bibi Petunia tahu dia tidak betul-betul menyihir. Tetapi Harry tetap harus menunduk…”. We can see that after the word ‘magic’ there is a comma, but in the Indonesian translation it changed into full stop and followed by the word ‘Tetapi’. Based on Ejaan Yang Disempurnakan (EYD), we can not use ‘tetapi’ after full stop; it must be used after comma. If we still translate the word ‘but’ after full stop, we should translate it into ‘Akan tetapi’.
To conclude, in the surface, the quality of the translation is good. We can catch the meaning of the story by reading this Indonesian translation. However, if we goes further, by analyzing word by word, phrase by phrase, or sentence by sentence, we can find the improper translation.

INTRODUCTION
This essay was conducted to discuss the translation text of Chapter 1 of Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets entitled The Worst Birthday. The translator has translated the title into “Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk”. Our study found many discussable objects in the translation text “Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk” which had been made by Listiana Srisanti, the legitimate translator for entire series of Harry Potter novel. For comparing, we have also made a translation of “The Worst Birthday” and sent it to Mr.Rohani’s e-mail.
RESULT OF ANALYSIS
Below is our critical opinion towards “Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk” made by Listiana Srisanti :

1. A lot of inappropriate dictions have been used in this text. The translator seems did not pay much attention whether her translation in Bahasa Indonesia was appropriate or not with the sense of Bahasa Indonesia literature itself. Inappropriate dictions do not mean that some words are wrong, but criticize that translation words in Bahasa Indonesia of “Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk” involves no feeling or emotion comparing with the original novel. There are almost no aesthetic in many sentence arrangements. The translation does not have any tone or beautiful language manner of Bahasa Indonesia since many dictions chosen and sentence arranged in a very formal way In short, some translation words or sentences do not convey J.K. Rowling’s message.
2. The translator seems lack of ability in transforming the nature of each character into their dialogues. For example, on the page 12 of the original book, primarily in the dialogue between Duddley and Harry we can understand that Duddley is mocking Harry. On the other hand, in the translation text, tone of the dialogue seems have no impression of mocking.
3. Several mistakes of translation arise in the ‘Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk’. Our analysis has found some mistakes words used to translate. They cause misunderstanding about the story to the reader who usually imagine a story or novel seems real in their mind. We have analyzed our suggestions for the correct meaning based on Oxford Dictionary then compared with our opinion.
CONLUSION
From the analysis above we can conclude that the quality of “Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk” made by Listiana Srisanti needs more revision in order to make the Indonesia version of Harry Potter as good as the original written by J.K. Rowling. Suggestion for the translator is ‘A literal word for word rendering of the text is not really a translation. You should always strive not only to convey meaning as precisely as possible, but also tone, and to make sure the translation reads well. Don’t be afraid to rearrange or rebuild sentences – well-expressed ideas are far more important than consistent grammar. This is an art form, there is always room for improvement’ (google.com – translation for progress).

An Analysis of the Quality of the Indonesian Translation on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets chapter one “ The Worst Birthday”
Translation is the interpreting of the meaning of a text and the subsequent production of an equivalent text that communicates the same message in another language. The text to be translated is called the “source text,” and the language that is to be translated into is called the “target language,” and the final product is sometimes called “the target language” (wikimedia).
The definitions of translation suggested above imply that producing the same meaning or message in the target language text as intended by the original author is the main objective of a translator. This notion of 'sameness' is often understood as an equivalence relation between the source and target texts. This equivalence relation is generally considered the most salient feature of a quality translation.
A good translation is that the target text and the source text have a same impression to the original reader and the target reader who don’t have the same cultural background and experience. The Indonesian translation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets chapter one “ The Worst Birthday” is good enough because it has an equivalent message and meaning with the original text. When I read the original text in English then I read the Indonesian translation, I felt the same impression and feeling toward the story. For example, on the sentence Harry crossed to his bedroom on tiptoe, slipped inside, closed the door and turned to collapse on his bed has the same impression with Harry berjingkat menuju kamarnya, menyelinap masuk, menutup pintu, dan berbalik untuk mengempaskan diri ke atas tempat tidurnya. Both the original sentence and the Indonesian sentence have the same message and meaning.
There are some problems dealing with the exact equivalence. Firstly, it is impossible for a text to have constant interpretations even for the same person on two occasions. Secondly, translation is a matter of subjective interpretation of translators of the source language text. Thus, producing an objective effect on the target text readers, which is the same as that on the source text readers is an unrealistic expectation. Thirdly, it may not be possible for translators to determine how audiences responded to the source text when it was first produced (Hervey, Higgins and Haywood,1995: 14)
Due to the problems above, loss and addition of information in translation cannot be avoided. However, the translator used some strategies to deal with them. She added more information to make the culture-specific concepts clearer, such as on the sentence Not for the first time, an argument had broken out over breakfast at number four, Privet Drive. She translated it into Bukan untuk pertama kalinya pertengkaran meledak di meja makan rumah Privet Drive nomor empat. She added rumah Prevet Drive in Indonesian text to give information that Privet Drive is a name of house. But in this sentence she also deleted the information ‘breakfast’. She translated it into ‘meja makan’. It can make the reader confuse when the argument had broken out.
The translator also used structural adjustment to make both the text have the same messages, such as on the sentence What wouldn’t he give now for a message from Hogwarts? She translated it into Dia rela memberikan apapun untuk mendapatkan kabar dari Hogwarts. In this case she change negative sentence into positive sentence because Indonesian people unusual said Apa yang tidak mungkin dia berikan sekarang untuk mendapatkan kabar dari Hogwarts?
As a whole, the text is good enough though there are some sentence that are not usual in Indonesian sentence like on the sentence As neither Dudley nor the hedge was in any way hurt, Aunt Petunia he hadn’t really done magic, but he still had to duck as she aimed a heavy blow at his head with the soapy frying pan and the translation is Karena baik Dudley maupun pagarnya tidak bercacat, Bibi Petunia tahu dia tidak betul-betul menyihir. Tetapi Harry tetap harus menunduk menghindar ketika Bibi Petunia mengayunkan wajah bersabun ke kepalanya. In my opinion the sentence ‘tak bercacat’ unusual used in Indonesian sentence, it may be better be only ‘tidak cacat’.
From the explanation above, I conclude that the quality of the Indonesian translation for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets chapter one “ The Worst Birthday” is good enough. The Indonesian reader still can get the same message from the original text though there are some unusual words used in Indonesian grammar.

Harry Potter is not only phenomenal book but also film. Almost children and adults like to read and watch it. And they always wait the next chapter or episode of series Harry Potter. Harry Potter is not only popular in the native country but also in other many countries. The story of Harry Potter is very wonderful, full of imagination and very interesting.
We know that both Harry Potter is available on book and film uses English for its language. In this case the translation skill is very fundamental to introduce Harry Potter to the readers or audiences in many part of who have different language. Series of Harry Potter has been introduced in Indonesia from first edition, both book and film, and both of them has been translated into Indonesian language by Indonesian people. So, the existence of translator here is very important, because we can understand the story by their service.
In this Indonesian version of Harry Potter that I have read, basically, the translation is very meaningful enough, also, we can understand the whole of the story and what the author writes. So the readers can follow the story.
The important aspect of translation skill is that it can be understand by the reader or the messages from the author can be conveyed by the translator. And also, the translator should be consider about the native culture. He should bring and maintain the meaning and without ignore the culture in his translation. So their result can be understood and can be accepted by the reader.
In chapter one of Harry Potter “The Worst Birthday” that has been translated into “Ulang Tahun Paling Buruk” in Indonesia. It has been translated nearly perfect because the readers can understand and catch the meaning and the messages of the story. But, for people who have good skill in English or master it very well. They maybe feel unsatisfactory enough because they can feel different sense if they read the original book and the translation one.
First, we find that not whole words of phrases didn’t translate into Indonesian words, such as, “Mr. and Mrs.” the translation still use English words, but didn’t translate them into Indonesian language, “Tuan and Nyonya” why the translator do that? He must been have certain reason for it. It doesn’t matter if the reader is an adult who know the meaning, but as we know that the readers of Harry Potter is also the children or young children who might not understand the meaning of the two words above. I think it will reduce their comprehension of the story. But, the positive side the using of that words maybe children want to know and then ask someone or search the meaning in the dictionary until they find the meaning.
Second, letter M in Magic words that is translated into Indonesian language S in “Sihir” is very useful of us to understand. Imagine that the translator still uses Magic and M? I think it doesn’t matter because words Magic is well-known for Indonesian people.
Third, why didn’t the translator use the same font in typed the result of his translation? I think that, when we translate something especially book, we should consider about everything to maintain the original of the result including the letter or the way the author writes.
Fourth, the sense of the story in Indonesian Harry Potter has been convey by the translator. So, the readers can enjoy and follow the story by their heart and imagination because both the author and the translation has choose the right words and diction. The readers can imagine what the author writes about the story.
Finally, based on my analysis, the translation of Harry Potter in Indonesian version is very good. The translator can convey the messages of the story very well. And use the appropriate diction without ignore about the native language and custom. Here, I see that the translator still maintain the native culture of the native language of Harry Potter story. And it’s the time for Harry Potter to say thank for all of the translators in around the world because of them Harry Potter becomes very popular in many parts of the world.

Seusai saya memberikan kuliah fisika tenis di Tokyo Denki University Jepang, Prof. Nakamura dekan fakultas informatika TDU menyalami saya dan mengatakan, anda pasti seorang pakar tenis. Permainan tenis selalu dimulai dengan serve. Tapi sayangnya para pemain amatir biasanya justru tidak terlalu mempedulikannya. Lain halnya dengan pemain profesional tingkat dunia. Mereka justru mengasah kemampuan mereka untuk melakukan serve sesempurna mungkin karena pada saat serve mereka punya kesempatan untuk mencuri angka dan mengendalikan permainan. Nama-nama seperti Pete Sampras, Boris Becker, dan Goran Ivanicevic dikenal jagoan dalam melakukan serve karena bisa mencapai kecepatan 190-215 km/jam. Greg Rusedski memegang rekor serve dengan 239, 8 km/jam sedangkan untuk pemain cewek, Venus Williams yang memegang rekor dengan 205 km/jam. Secepat apa sih tangannya mengayunkan raket? Untuk menghasilkan serve yang hebat, Venus harus melakukan ayunan menembus udara dengan memperhitungkan faktor posisi raket, proyeksi dan kecepatan tumbukan, serta mengkoordinasikan semuanya dengan pergerakan tubuhnya. Agar bola bergerak dengan kecepatan tinggi, serve dikondisikan supaya raket menumbuk bola tepat di daerah dead spot Letak dead spot jauh dari tangan. Letak dead spot jauh dari tangan. Tennis match is always started with serve. However, unfortunately, amateur players are usually not really aware about it. It is different from the world professional players. They exactly sharpen their abilities to serve as perfect as possible because just at the moment of serve they have chance to get the point and lead the games. Names like Pete Sampras, Boris Becker, and Goran Ivanovic are known as the masters of serve because their serves can reach at a speed of 190-215 km/h. To generate a terrific serve, Venus must accomplish an air break through swinging by calculating racket positioning factor, projection and stroke speed, and coordinating all of them with her body movement. In order to make the ball move in a high speed, serve is conditioned to make the racket hit the ball exactly in the dead spot area. The dead spot location is further from the hand. According to physics, the furthest point from the hand (spin center) has the fastest speed. Not only that, when the ball reaches the dead spot area, almost all of the racket momentum is transferred into the ball. There is also another advantage of this kind of serve. Here, the ball reaches the furthest point or the highest point of the racket, so the chance to get it in is bigger.
Say, don’t you know that the awesome serve can make people become the Wimbledon winner? Bob Falkenbur had been the Wimbledon winner only by his awesome serve and volley. Other players who have serves which are scared are Arthur Ashe, John Doeg and of course Pete Sampras, the player who is dubbed as the one who has the best and consistent serve.
